ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Skate Canada Ladies Free Skate

1) Alexe Gilles (USA)
Music: The Queen Symphony, Bohemian Rhapsody

  • Nice opening combo, good for her
  • I love her purple dress
  • Popped a jump, fell on the next
  • 2 more falls
  • Poor girl is having a rough skate today, but she really is lovely when she has her good moments
  • As a coach, I wonder what you say to your skater after a disappointment like that
  • FS Score: 45.71 (technical) + 40.91 (presentation) - 2.00 (deduction) = 84.62
  • 41.02 (SP) + 84.62 (FS) = 125.64

2) Sonia LaFuente (Spain)
    Music: Les Miserables

  • Already I'm not a fan of the costume
  • This opening musical sequence is "Look down" from Les Miserables, why isn't it listed?
  • I'm not a huge fan of this program, it just didn't tell me a story and she seemed disinterested
  • FS Score: 47.02 (technical) + 42.42 (presentation) - 1.00 (deduction) = 88.44
  • 42.76 (SP) + 88.44 (FS) = 131.20

3) Valentina Marchei (Italy)
    Music: Die Fledermaus by Strauss

  • This costume is way too flashy and jazzy for this music in my opinion
  • She has some nice speed going, but needs to be careful that she doesn't lose control of her body and start flailing
  • FS Score: 45.30 (technical) + 46.91 (presentation)  = 92.21
  • 45.57 (SP) + 92.21  (FS) = 137.78

4) Fumie Suguri (Japan) **
    Music: Scheherazade

  • I don't know what has happened to Fumie in the past few years
  • She just looks like she is marking thinks out there and like she'd rather be anywhere but here
  • FS Score: 38.54 (technical) + 47.13 (presentation) - 1.00 (deduction) = 84.67
  • 48.17 (SP) + 84.67 (FS) = 132.84

5) Myriane Samson (Canada)
    Music: Bohemian Rhapsody

  • I really like this music
  • What a gorgeous flow across the ice
  • She is so very expressive in her upper body
  • That was a tough fall
  • Squeaked out a 3-jump combination
  • This seems to be the song of the event
  • FS Score: 51.36 (technical) + 50.01 (presentation) - 1.00 (deduction) = 100.43
  • 51.62 (SP) + 100.43 (FS) = 152.05

6) Haruka Imai (Japan)
    Music: Polovesian Dances

  • She has a lot of spunk and energy, good speed
  • I'd like for her to finish her lines a little bit more, straight legs, pointed feet
  • FS Score: 55.71 (technical) + 47.31 (presentation) - 1.00 (deduction) = 102.02
  • 52.52 (SP) + 102.02 (FS) 154.54

7) Amelie Lacoste (Canada) **
    Music: Sheherazade

  • This is just a personal opinion, but I wouldn't touch this music after Michelle Kwan did it in 2002, just like Bolero in dance and Moonlight Sonata in pairs
  • Hand down there on that jump
  • I like her intense focus here, it works for the piece
  • A fall there, i hope this is not getting away from her
  • FS Score: 49.43 (technical) + 53.53 (presentation) - 1.00 (deduction) = 101.96
  • 55.30 (SP) + 101.96 (FS) =157.26

8) Alissa Csizny (USA)
Music: Winter and Spring by Winston

  • What a gorgeous skater when she is on
  • I love that from the first moment of the music, Alissa is into performance mode
  • This costume reminds me of an ice dance dress with its flowing pieces, which I really like as a nice break from the traditional short ladies dress
  • Now that Sasha Cohen is "retired," I think there is no one in the world who can rival Alissa's lines, spins, and positions overall
  • That donut spin into a Bielman is incredibly gorgeous
  • I am so happy she is still performing spirals, even though they are no longer required
  • A tough fall there, but with the momentum of the performance, I doubt it hurts her at all
  • FS Score: 55.95 (technical) + 61.47 (presentation) - 1.00 (deduction) = 116.42
  • 55.95 (SP) + 116.42 (FS) = 172.37

9) Agnes Zawadzki (USA) **
    Music: Dark Eyes

  • I hate that she had a fall on her first jump out, but for a youngster, she is seeming to recover well
  • Showing nice flexibility in her Bielaman position
  • Popped a jump there in the middle
  • I love how she checks her landings with her jumps and arms to really complete the jump
  • A stumble out of the jump there
  • Nice strong, intense ending
  • This wasn't the strongest showing for her, but I think they were just freshman nerves and she is going to be a force to be reckoned with, mark my words
  • FS Score: 46.26 (technical) + 52.80 (presentation) - 1.00 (deduction) = 98.06
  • 56.29 (SP) + 98.06 (FS) = 154.35

10) Ksenia Makarova (Russia)
    Music: Evita

  • Ksenia looks so much more mature this season than last year, its really astounding
  • I cannot get over how she looks like such a different skater now
  • Fell out of a jump there a little
  • I think I may have to go with Ksenia for my fantasy team in her next grand prix, she is looking very strong
  • FS Score: 55.33 (technical) + 51.77 (presentation)  = 107.10
  • 57.90 (SP) + 107.10 (FS) = 165.00

11) Cynthia Phaneuf (Canada) **
Music: Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini

  • This poor gal hasn't been the most consistent in the past so I hope she can hold it together here in her home country after that awesome short program
  • A nice clean 3-jump combination
  • She has a calm mature look about her
  • But then a hard fall
  • Oh this poor gal, she is having a hard time with these falls
  • This is unfortunate that such a lovely skater had to fall apart so hard after such a good short program here in here at home
  • FS Score: 42.96 (technical) + 57.04 (presentation) - 2.00 (deduction) = 98.00
  • 58.24 (SP) + 98.00 (FS) = 156.24
