2013 Skate America: Short Dance Recap

What else is there to say about Davis & White (USA)? If I'm speechless, you know it's real and it's deep. This piece was really about Charlie for me. My eye went to him and Meryl was kind of there in the background. Is it just me or is his extension improving along with his performance quality? Love, love, loved it. I could have just as easily been watching the Grand Prix Final as the first major event of the season...they are in that good of shape. Short Dance Total: 75.70

Cappellini & Lanotte (ITA) put the DANCE in Ice Dance. I'm OBSESSED with this choreography! This is a perfect example of skating a full piece from beginning to end. They really told a complete story. I'm partial to a good show tune, but regardless, they are on my radar for the Olympic podium. Short Dance Total: 69.88

Shibutani & Shibutani (USA) rose to the occasion and brought it tonight. Alex is really catching my eye this year, but I want her to step it up and pull focus. I'm loving this piece and the fact that they didn't pick the most obvious Michael Buble pieces. Marina does it again, the woman can do no wrong. This piece has potential and they are going places with it. Short Dance Total: 61.26

Hubbell & Donohue (USA) just don't totally have it for me. I'm not sure why, but they are just a little B-team for me. Zach is awesome, but Madison doesn't do so much for me. She's a little cash for clunkers. He is all over my radar, and for his sake, I hope she can amp up the excitement. Short Dance Total: 60.71

I had no strong feelings about Zlobina & Sitnikov (AZE) tonight. They do have a nice flow and smoothness to their work, but the choreography and themes of the program did nothing much for me. Short Dance Total: 54.53

Reed & Reed (JPN) were just meh for me. Twizzle issue aside, the whole piece just looked too calculated and not nearly dancy enough. They were too stiff and the ending just felt out of control for me. It felt like it was about to unravel at any moment...a little Roughtown USA. Short Dance Total: 54.28

Carron & Jones (FRA) had me with their musical selection, and they're delightful to look at, but the program didn't build or really go anywhere. They are charming and the piece has potential if they can build up the excitement throughout the season. Short Dance Total: 54.10

Tobias & Stagniunas (LTU) have a great look and this was a cute program, but she needs to amp up the vavavoom. That, or they need to do A Chorus Line because she's obviously Val. His posture seemed a little clunky today, as did that rotational lift. I hope they clean that up. Short Dance Total: 53.17

Cup of China: Short Dance LIVE BLOG

1) Xioyang Yu & Chen Wang (CHN)
Music: Oh Susanna & Twilight Waltz

• Oh boy, a Chinese team doing a cowboy theme?
• I've always loved her facial expression
• This his very zippy
• He was a little crooked on the twizzle, they could've held them out longer
• They are losing energy in the Tennessee Waltz segment
• Oh boy, Cotton Eye was a surprise
• 20.58 (TES) + 22.39 (PCS) = 42.97

2) Madison Chock & Evan Bates (USA)
 Music: Quidam

• Her costume is absolutely to die for
• They need to kill this!
• She is perfectly in character, I love it
• Their posture and flow over the ice is gorgeous
• This Cirque piece suits them, she can use all of her flexibility to her advantage
• Nice unison on the twizzles, though the arm positions weren't always matching perfectly
• From what I know thus far of the Yankee polka, they seem to be doing well, the rhythm is there
• I particularly like the teams that have bought into the whimsy of the Yankee Polka
• She is divine
• 30.90 (TES) + 28.36 (PCS) = 59.29

3) Charlene Guignard & Marco Fabbri (ITA)
Music: Buonglorno a Te & Tritsch Tratsch

• We are seing such beautiful, light programs in the short, it's a breath of fresh air
• He is very smooth with great upper body carriage, but she seems to flail a lot
• That rotational lift looked a little reckless
• That all looked so frantic to me
• 29.17 (TES) + 26.40 (PCS) = 55.57

4) Victoria Sinitsina & Ruslan Zhiganshin (RUS)
Music: Tennessee Waltz & Country Polka

• Another Tennessee Waltz?
• This team is divine, let's see how they translate as seniors
• Very smooth so far
• He looks like a senior man, but she looks like a junior lady; could be the costuming
• I like the mirroring patterns, but they weren't executed quite perfectly
• The choreography in these "country" pieces is offensive to people from the south
• 28.25 (TES) + 26.84 (PCS) = 55.09

5) Xintong Huang & Xun Zheng (CHN)
  Music: Waltz & Polka

• This is the most understated costuming I've ever seen on them
• They usually score quite well in the short dance so we'll see
• They are never afraid to go to a "costumey place" you'll never see him in all black
• Nice speed off the bat, but synch issues in the twizzles
• I love how expressive they are with their upper bodies
• I don't like the disconnect between the waltz an the polka, it just looks sloppy to me
• His arms are getting so sloppy in this second section of the piece
• 21.99 (TES) + 24.77 (PCS) = 46.76

6) Ekaterina Bobrova & Dmitri Soloviev (RUS)
Music: Put in a Good Word for the Poor Hussar & The Crew

• This is the best I've ever seen her costumed
• Very fast opening, great use of the musical nuances and intricacies
• Very quick work of the polka, clean crisp steps
• This music is so charming
• You can tell this is their second event, the look so well trained and rehearsed
• That lift seemed terribly out of place for this program
• Very nice program, I think that is my favorite short dance that I've seen
• 31.50 (TES) + 32.82 (PCS) = 64.32

7) Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew (CAN)
  Music: The Sound of Music

• Gorgeous musical selection from such a classic-looking team
• I'm missing some of the expression that I've come to love from them
• Okay, they are coming more into the performance here in the 2nd part
• Twizzle synchronization issues, Andrew was a little slower
• That was a wonderful straight line-no touching sequence
• That was delightful and so enjoyable to watch
• 32.83 (TES) + 32.76 (PCS) = 65.59

8) Nathalie Pechalat & Fabian Bourzat (FRA)
Music: Gaite Parisienne & Sous le ciel de Paris

• I just love the costuming
• Very playful, their showmanship is always fantastic
• Very good speed at the beginning, a little frantic in the twizzles
• I have difficulty tracking the skaters when then do the mirroring sequences
• I love the idea of that straight line lift, but it loked very labored
• I love the quickness of the last section, but it is a very abrupt transition from the middle piece of music
• I like this program but it's not at it's best, I can see it being stellar by the end of the season
• 34.00 (TES) + 35.15 (PCS) = 69.15

2012 Four Continents Championships: Short Dance LIVE Coverage

1) Cortney Mansour & Daryn Zhunussov (KAZ)

• Oh the music selections, kill me now
• She looks like she's bent in half
• Trip and then a fall, they can't seem to get their feet under them
• This costume is just unecessary
• 13.22 (TES) + 13.31 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 25.53

2) Anna Nagornyuk & Viktor Kovalenko (UZB)

• This costume is very European-looking costumes
• These twizzles are rough, hand down for him
• Not much free leg extension
• That was an okay performance, but nothing spectacular
• 21.49 (TES) + 18.44 (PCS) = 39.93

3) Corenne Bruhns & Ryan Van Natten (MEX)

• This is a very slow moving piece
• There is no commitment to the piece, she looks like she's not giving complete effort
• Lack of commitment to a performance bothers me more than falling
• 20.64 (TES) + 15.29 (PCS) = 35.93

4) Xiaoyang Yu & Chen Wang (CHN)

• The shoulders, the ruffles, the stripes, it's all so so so bad
• He almost ate it on that twizzle, very crooked
• As loud as the costumes are, this is a very boring dance
• Those long tails on the skirts terrify me, it's so easy to catch a blade
• 24.00 (TES) + 21.42 (PCS) = 45.42

5) Alexandra Paul & Mitchell Islam (CAN)

• Really great subtleties in the opening
• This is one of the few smooth and sultry pieces this season
• This is beautiful, very graceful and elegant
• I like her hair floating like that, it's better out of the bun
• Not as much attack on the twizzles as I would've liked
• Improved from the rest of what I've seen from them this season
• 23.71 (TES) + 24.81 (PCS) = 48.52

6) Danielle Obrien & Gregory Merriman (AUS)

• That skirt doesn't seem to match the rest of the dress
• She exits the twizzles a turn early
• Nice use of the free arm in the rhumba sequence
• This team is packaged well and they look professional, they just need some more work
• 20.64 (TES) + 20.46 (PCS) = 40.10

7) Madison Hubbell & Zachary Donohue (USA)

• He is a dream to watch, he his so dancy
• Oh no, where did that fall come from
• Hey, I'd rather you fall because you're too into the movement than half-assing it
• Oh boy, she wobbles a little on the twizzle
• At least her costume is more sassy this time
• They look very dejected after the fall and the bobble
• 25.50 (TES) + 25.43 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 49.93

8) Meryl Davis & Charlie White (USA)

• They are the definition of hair-ography
• So much energy in that opening
• He always looks like he's going to spin out of control everytime on the twizzles but never does!
• I'm glad they went all JLo this season, it suits them so well
• I  love that part of the footwork that looks like they're going into a sit spin
• 34.71 (TES) + 37.44 (PCS) + 72.15

9) Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir (CAN)

• All those ruffles floating in the rhumba sequence is just obnoxious
• That costume is such a distraction, breaks up the lines
• The twizzle timing was perfect, but the arms are a little off
• I can only watch her in that costume because his is so boring by comparison
• They just don't look excited to be out there
• Anybody else surprised that ruffle didn't get in his face in the on that final rotational lift
• 33.92 (TES) + 37.68 (PCS) = 71.60

10) Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibuani (USA)

• They look look a little slow today, other than the twizzles of course
• They arguably have the best unison of the top teams overall
• Whatever Corky Ballas did, it's working for them
• They've really come into their own this season, they're really stepping it up on this short dance
• I like their new costumes and their new aggressive attitude
• 31.86 (TES) + 31.52 (PCS) 63.38

11) Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje (CAN)

• I feel like this isn't as spicy as it could be, I don't know why
• They look really rushed, it looks a little frantic
• Their arms look a little flaily
• Something about it just seemed off today, no major mistakes, just something a little off
• 31.43 (TES) + 32.80 (PCS) = 64.23

2012 US Figure Skating Championships: Senior Short Dance LIVE Coverage

1) Carina Glastris & Kevin Allison

 Music: Bacalao

• Good speed in the rhumba patterns, a little close to the wall
• She did a few less twizzles that he did, major unison issues on that
• I feel like their arm movements aren't quite matching
• This is a nice team, they are well-matched in terms of height
• They can use some more refinements on the basics for sure

11.58 (TES) + 16.64 (PCS) = 28.22

2) Brittany Schmucker & Adam Munday

 Music: Medley

• These leg warmers are just a lot
• He turned her around so she was facing the right way, that was cute
• A little sloppy at the beginning
• Pretty good unison in the twizzles
• She needs to straighten those legs out more in the rhumba pattern

23.21 (TES) + 19.97 (PCS) = 43.18

3) Ginna Hoptman & Pavel Filchenkov

 Music:

• This music is going to get really old tonight
• Ohh opposite rotating twizzles there, he lost it on his
• Their edges are a little bit muddled on that compulsory pattern, legs are slightly bent
• Get it Tanith Belbin lift

25.85  (TES) + 20.42 (PCS) = 46.27

4) Anastasia Olson & Jordan Cowan

 Music:

• They've had a solid season thus far, getting an International, and beating Lichtman & Copley at their sectional
• Great quick hip action from Anastasia
• Good jump into the twizzles and great unison
• I like that color on her, it's a cross between the ever-popular red and hot pink
• He has a very expressive upper body, he looks very mature, not at all like a 1st year senior
• Great flexibility from Anastasia on that lift
• This is the first really advanced team we've seen tonight
• I'd like to see a little more speed in these Rhumba patterns, but it's better to be exact than fast
• I like that crisp ending, not a lot of fluff at the end

28.78 (TES) + 24.66 (PCS) = 53.44

5) Isabella Cannuscio & Ian Lorello

 Music: Cuando Pienso/Tequila

• For some reason her costume looks more flapper than Latin to me
• They do have really good bend in their knees
• Good unison in the subtleties of the arm movements
• Amazing show of strength in that parallel lift
• Good character shift into that new piece of music
• Isabella looks a little timid, but Ian is really selling it
• Good job ending it on a good note, nice performance overall

  (TES) + (PCS) = 50.03

6) Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani

 Music: Medley

• I love Alex's new shirt!
• Really great speed and precision off the top
• I love that drop spin move, but it always looks a little out of control
• They have fantastic body control
• Really fast twizzles, the only issue was a difference in the height of the arms
• I really like this new section a lot, so much fun, they apparently worked with a ballroom coach
• This program seems better suited to their strengths, fantastic job!

  (TES) + (PCS) = 72.61

7) Charlotte Lichtman & Dean Copely

 Music:

• Very tentative approach today
• They still look slightly Juniorish this year, tough to transition to senior
• Good technique, great coaching will do that
• Dean is a great partner, I'd like Charlotte to be more of a Diva

  (TES) + (PCS) =

8) Emily Samuelson & Todd Gilles

 Music:

• Big improvement over Cup of China
• They both look to be in much better shape the last event they did
• Much better unison
• He frames Emily very well
• She has such lines and toe point, is it possible for her to hit a bad position?

  (TES) + (PCS) =

9) Madison Chock & Evan Bates

 Music:

• I just love them
• Evan is a boy-next-door and Madison is a Diva Star so together they look so interesting
• The height difference is less and less of an issue everytime
• They actually manage to make the Rhumba look like a dance
• The lifts are wonderful, his tall frame is great for her

26.36 (TES) + 29.13 (PCS) = 55.49

10) Anastasia Cannuscio & Ian Lorello

 Music:

• I love that shade of yellow on her, the mustard looks great with her hair and skin
• She needs some more energy and power in that free arm
• I like those extended leg twizzles, reminds me of a la second turns in ballet
• Would love to see some more speed in that compulsory sequence
• I feel like this piece is lacking some excitement, perhaps if they rearranged some of the elements?

 30.35 (TES) + 23.47 (PCS) = 53.82

11) Madison Hubbell & Zachary Donohue

 Music: Latin Medley

• They are super high energy
• He is just gorgeous to watch, I love his hip action
• I love that she gets to be a sassy diva now that she's not skating with her brother
• That straight line lift makes a beautiful picture
• This short dance is much improved from Skate America
• This is one of the most sensual Rhumba's we've seen all night

27.51 (TES) + 30.05 (PCS) = 57.56

12) Meredith Zuber & Kyle Herring

 Music:

• That dress with the full on arm coverings is just a lot to stomach, but she's gorgeous though
• This is slightly choppy for me
• That costume is just so distracting it's hard to look at the skating
• The Rhumba section lacked some precision
• They do have nice energy though

24.65 (TES) + 18.48 (PCS) = 43.13

13) Meryl Davis & Charlie White

 Music: On the Floor

• What do you say about them that hasn't already been said
• Those twizzles are so close together, it ups the excitement level
• I'm not loving this bronze dress on Meryl, I miss the orange, but I do like Charlie's metallic shirt
• Get it J-Lo section!
• That lift is really nice
• That shoot through the legs is so cool
• Charlie's hair looks longer again!

 38.22 (TES) + 38.67 (PCS) = 76.89

14) Lynn Kriengkrairut & Logan Giulietti-Schmitt

 Music:

• I don't like this blue costume, it's more flapper than Latin for me
• They move so well together, it's all that experience
• Great upside down lift!

 29.50 (TES) + 26.87 (PCS) = 56.37
