Who Killed It and Who Fell Off the Combo: The Short Dance

Killed It!: These teams brought the beauty, the excitement, the intrigue
  • Every blessed thing about Guillaume Cizeron
  • If you take off the skates, Cizeron is the only natural dancer in the entire event
  • The choreographic specificity of the entire group 5
  • Andrew Poje's entire presentation
  • The fire and precision of the Shibutanis
  • Madison Chock's perfect bun
  • The dramatic build up to group 6
  • Paul & Islam's rotational lift
  • Paul Poirier's amazing butt
  • Hubbell & Donohue's smoothness
  • Stepanova & Bukin's sit spin twizzled.....that abdominal control!
  • Monko & Khaliavin's matching free leg in the twizzle sequence
  • The grace, poise, and carriage of Marie-France
  • The Hurtado and Diaz counterbalance
  • Federica Testa's strapless number
  • Barbara Fusar-Poli
  • Elena Ilinykh's overall diva qualities
  • The energy and spunk of Wang and Liu
  • Juri Karakin's hairography

Fell Off The Combo: These teams missed the mark
  • Gabriella Papadakis' detached-looking bun
  • Kaitlyn Weaver's saggy bun
  • Marina's political clout
  • Anna Cappellini's carriage-simultaneously stiff and wild
  • So many women with sloppy, uneven buns
  • Guignard & Fabri falling on the choreographic spinning movement
  • Gilles & Poirier's overly dramatic entrances and exits
  • Piper Gilles' drag queen eye makeup
  • Donohue's damn twizzle
  • Elena Ilinykh paired with Ruslan Zhiganshin who looks like little brother
  • Kirill Minov's hair.....honey please
  • Any low or intermediate team doing interweaving twizzle patterns
  • Viktoria Kavaliova's "Whatever Lola Wants" gloves
  • Smart & Buckland's twizzles
  • The Finnish team's twizzles
  • Natalia Kaliszek's hideous dress/croptop getup
  • Bent free legs (multiple offenders)

Skate Canada: Pairs Short Program LIVE BLOG!

2) Tiffany Vise & Don Baldwin (USA)
     Music: Open Arms
  • They look like they feel awkward doing that opening sequence
  • I really like the pairs that jump opposite of one another, but it's better when they land them
  • She really must point that foot
  • Feed cutting in and out terribly
  • You know it's bad when the man's foot is pointed more than the woman's
  • They should stick to more athletic programs as the artistry isn't their strongest suit
  • She looks most at home in the lifts because she is such an athlete
  • 24.41 (TES) + 23.06 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 46.47
3) Daria Popova & Bruno Massot (FRA)
     Music: La Belle Historie
  • They are intense,  love it!
  • This team looks slick
  • The entrance into that throw was long and labored, the throw was very crashy
  • Oy vey, so let's take back what I said about this team looking slick, they are falling apart at the seems
  • Early season pairs events are usually a travesty and this one is certainly living up
  • 25.53 (TES) + 23.90 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 48.43
4) Paige Lawrence & Rudi Swiegers (CAN)
 Music: Robin and Marion
  • This opening is gorgeous
  • They look so smooth and fast
  • Paige is such a precious little pixie
  • Really tight SBS jumps
  • This is really the best I've ever seen them
  • That was divine-like a breath of fresh air
  • 25.90 (TES) + 26.98 (PCS) = 52.88
5) Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford (CAN)
 Music: La Boheme
  • Odd costuming, I don't like it at all
  • I kind of like Eric's long hair flapping in the wind, but it looks more like Ice Dance hair
  • These lifts are going to be very slick by the end of the season' they are choppy now but they'll get there
  • They are telegraphing those jumps, they can do better
  • That throw looked doomed from the takeoff, how did she land it?
  • He is much more enjoyable to watch now; she is stiff but he is so fluid
  • She needs to mimic his reckless abandon
  • 35.35 (TES) + 29.14 (PCS) = 64.49
6) Stefania Berton & Ondrej Hotarek (ITA)
 Music: Paint it Black
  • Wow this is smooth
  • The lines are wonderful in all black, though I could do without her Morticia Addams spiderweb detail
  • Spins a little off
  • The are lacking in the fine details, but they kill it in their strength areas, the athletic jumps and throws
  • 31.13 (TES) + 28.66 (PCS) = 59.79
7) Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy (GER)
 Music: Kismet
  •  Here come the disco animals from Lady Gaga's bathhouse
  • Awesome speed, impeccable body lines
  • Poor Robin, you know he just goes along with Aliona's every whim
  • This has to be old hat to them, I just love how they keep it fresh every year
  • These costumes are very Merce Cunningham
  • Very cool entrance into the press lift and a very unique ending
  • 38.63 (TES) + 33.63 (PCS) = 72.26

2012 Four Continents Championships: Pairs Short Program LIVE Coverage

1) Caydee Denney & John Coughlin (USA)
    Music: East of Eden
  • Ice Musings and I are not obsessed with this themed entrance
  • This looks a little slow for me today
  • That was really slow getting into that lift
  • That was a save on the throw, she was super tilted in the air
  • Good showing overall from the home team
  • 35.55 (TES) + 27.80 (PCS) = 63.35
2) Jessica Dube & Sebastien Wolfe (CAN)
    Music: Three Hours After Midnight
  • I like her hair a lot and I love the zipper on the back of her dress
  • Good speed
  • I feel like she's reinvented herself as an athletic skater which is really cool
  • 31.28 (TES) + 26.40 (PCS) = 57.68
3) Mary Beth Marley & Rockne Brubaker (USA)
    Music: Singing in the Rain
  • I'm loving her right now, so quick and speedy right off the bat
  • Nice opening SBS jumps, great unison
  • That split twist is so improved from last season
  • Landed the throw on 2 feet, that's the only visible error
  • Stretch out those legs on the lift honey!
  • Nice button on the end
  • 34.96 (TES) + 27.46 (PCS) = 62.42
4) Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford (CAN)
     Music: Concierto de Aranjuez
  • Meagan kind of looks like Hilary Swank
  • Good fight on those SBS jumps, I don't know how she landed that
  • Girlfriend is attacking this
  • Did they change some of this choreography, I like it more than I remember it
  • She looks oddly hunched over and he is very upright which exaggerates the height difference
  • They're looking a bit tired here
  • Hands down on the throw
  • Something about it looked off today, I can't put my finger on it really
  • 31.44 (TES) + 26.09 (PCS) = 57.53
5) Yue Zhang & Lei Wang (CHN)
     Music: The Swan
  • All kinds of craziness on those SBS jumps, she doubles and he almost goes into the boards
  • Really labored throw, two-footed
  • They look really really tired out there, it's like slow motion
  • Some nice moments of elegance, but the whole thing just lacks spark
  •  24.21 (TES) + 23.63 (PCS) = 48.04
6) Huibo Dong & Yiming Wu (CHN)
    Music: Red Violin
  • Slightly off on those SBS jumps, just a slight unison issue
  • Wild on that throw, couldn't control the height, hands down
  • A lot of position changes on those throws, not such clean positions though
  • That was a decent skate, but no polish
  • 27.29 (TES) + 22.23 (PCS) = 49.52
7) Narumi Takahashi & Mervin Tran (JPN)
    Music: Imagine
  • That was a cute little fist bump
  • No elaborate opening poses here
  • They are one of the "beautiful, but" teams
  • Land those jumps Narumi please
  • A little scratchy there on that throw
  • Really nice entry into that lift, that's one of the best in the competition
  • This music and the choreography is fantastic
  • That is the only time you see a "unique entry" and the death spiral position is beautiful as well
  • 34.74 (TES) + 27.80 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 61.54
8) Wenjing Sui & Cong Han (CHN)
     Music: Country Dance
  • She definitely grew
  • They look like they were shot out of a rocket, it's a little too high energy for me
  • So far so good, as long as they don't fall on a crossover of something, they'll likely take the lead
  • I think this music may be arranged differently
  • Their presentation quality is a welcome change from the rest of the Chinese pairs who are usually stone-faced
  •  37.71 (TES) + 29.44 (PCS) = 66.75
9) Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig (USA)
    Music: The Man I Love
  • That looked like a 2-foot, but that's a HUGE improvement
  • She looked so good going in
  • That was a beautiful throw, fantastic glide out of it
  • So elegant, it's really refreshing to see them hit all those technical elements
  • Best short of the season by far
  • 32.47 (TES) + 28.28 (PCS) = 60.75
10) Paige Lawrence & Rudi Swiegers (CAN)
      Music: Beetlejuice

  • That was nearly a fall on the split twist, she went way off to the side
  • A lot of ice flying on those SBS jumps, but landed
  • This is kind of weird choreography, but it suits the music well
  • Very crooked position on the throw, but she managed to land it
  • 31.28 (TES) + 26.69 (PCS) = 57.97

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Trophee Eric Bompard Pairs Short Program LIVE BLOG

1) Jessica Dube & Sebastien Wolfe (CAN)
     Music: Three Hours Past Midnight
  • They had a nice debut at Skate Canada, let's hope that wasn't a fluke
  • I'm cheering especially hard for them because they're on my fantasy team
  • I love the exposed zipper on the back of her dress and I hate his belt
  • They seem to connect very well as a pair, but she is clearly the star
  • Nice split twist, but only a double
  • Perfect unison on the SBS triple salchows
  • This loungey music seems to suit them well
  • Nice position from her in the star lift
  • Good height on the throw, tilted in the air, but she straightens it out on the landing
  • This is shaping up to be a really solid short program from them
  • I like the level changes and position variations on the pair spin
  • I'd like to see more speed overall from both and more performance and expression from Sebastien
  • Great program from them, they'll be happy with that overall
SP Score: 28.23 (TES) + 25.01 (PCS) = 53.24

2) Vanessa James & Morgan Cipress (FRA)
     Music: Roxane
  • Hello Moulin Rouge
  • Double split twist, bent legs from her
  • They are really flying around quickly, but they're cutting everything off
  • Unison slightly off on the SBS triple toes, a lot of snow flying
  • Very rough position changes in the lift, awkward exit
  • I feel like they are really rushing everything
  • Hand down on the throw, that was only a double
  • They have potential, quite an athletic team, but they need to calm down and skate into the music, not over it
SP Score: 21.98 (TES) + 22.88 (PCS) = 44.86

3) Huibo Dong & Yiming Wu (CHN)
     Music: The Feeling Begins
  • Is it me or did they just start before the music?
  • Very clean SBS triple toes
  • I believe this is another Bin Yao team
  • Quick split triple twist, but she lands practically on his shoulder
  • Very ugly triple throw but she gets away with only a hand down, a lot of snow flying
  • That lift hit some very ugly positions and lost almost all of it's speed toward the end
  • They are not a bad team, but this team will never live up to the great Chines pairs
  • Her whole body is practically on the ice at the end of the death spiral
  • I like that intertwined leg position on the pair spin
SP Score: 27.44 (TES) + 21.83 (PCS) = 49.27

4) Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford (CAN)
     Music: Concierto de Aranjuez
  • These two are the stars of this group for sure, and medal favorites
  • Amazing speed
  • Wonderful split triple twist, I love that arched position she has going into it
  • Solid SBS 3toes, a little unison issue on the take off
  • She holds the position in the death spiral throughout
  • She is so strong, all muscle, the perfect look for a pairs skater
  • She shows outstanding flexibility in the pair spin, dare I say it she reminds me a bit of Aliona Savchenko
  • They started out so fast, losing a bit of speed in this step sequence
  • Very nice stretch in the lift, I'd like to see her point her foot harder
  • Hardly any speed going into that throw, very high wrap on her free leg, but she fights to land it
SP Score: 34.06 (TES) + 27.00 (PCS) = 61.06

5) Ksenia Stolbova & Fedor Klimov (RUS)
     Music: Bolero
  • Lots of Bolero this season thus far
  • So much speed right off the top
  • Only a split double twist
  • Huge throw, she rides that edge forever!
  • Perfect unison on the SBS 3Toes, as per the Russian way
  • If only they would give Bazarova/Larinov some of their technical skills and get back some elegance in return
  • Oh goodness, a fall on the death spiral! Did she lose her edge, or did he lose her hand?
  • This choreography still looks quite Junior-ish to me
  • Ended before the music; the rest of that program after the fall on the death spiral was a mess
SP Score: 25.38 (TES) + 25.43 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 48.81

6) Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig (USA)
     Music: The Man I Love
  • This is a gorgeous piece that suits them so well, I could see it as a free skate too
  • Really nice air position on the split triple twist, she almost stops on the landing
  • Fall on the SBS triple from Amanda, the one thing that is keeping them off of podiums
  • That was a gorgeous, textbook throw
  • I keep saying it, they're fantastic and they have the maturity that only comes with years and years together, but if they can't hit the jumps, they won't get the recognition they deserve
  • The connection between them is so real
  • That lift, nobody does it better
  • Fantastic position in the death spiral, she doesn't let her body position go like some other ladies do
SP Score: 29.83 (TES) + 28.86 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 57.69

7) Tatiana Volosozhar & Maxim Trankov (RUS)
Music: Bring Me Back To Life
  • You've gotta love that elaborate, chest-popping, entrance to their starting positions, at least it's in character!
  • I just can't get over these two, they look like they were created to skate together
  • Oh lord, she stumbles and falls exiting the split twist, he manages to pick her up right before he nearly skates over her
  • Great SBS triples
  • She BARELY hangs onto that throw landing, so much strength there
  • I love the this step sequence
  • I wouldn't mind this piece of music if it was a different arrangement that sounded less like Muzak
  • Messy program, but they're fighters!
SP Score: 33.01 (TES) + 31.68 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 63.69

8) Vera Bazarova &  Yuri Larionov (RUS)
     Music: Tosca
  • These two have run hot and cold since last season's Grand Prix Final
  • Wow, good SBS jumps from them! Just a slight timing difference between them bu tlanded!
  • Very clean catch in midair on the split twist
  • They lack speed, but the body lines are where they get points
  • Fall on the throw, just a really bad air position
  • I think her body touched the ice when they changed the hold in the death spiral
  • Beautiful lift positions individually, but some not so pretty transitions between them
  • They seem rushed today
  • I wish she'd be more expressive with her face, she almost looks lost
  • They're lacking spark, they need a good kick in the but
SP Score: 30.88 (TES) +29.18 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 59.06

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: NHK Trophy Pairs Short Program LIVE BLOG

1) Caydee Denney & John Coughlin (USA)
     Music: East of Eden
  • I've been trying hard not to like them but they're growing on me
  • Basically all they have to do is establish consistency and they'll be #1 in the US
  • Huge split 3 twist
  • This is a horrible arrangement of this music
  • Caydee doubles the SBS toe, just as she did in the warm-up, not the way to win favor with International judges
  • I like the weaving footwork, it complements the swell of the music quite well
  • I like the entrance into the lift, but she really needs to stretch out that position and milk it for all it's worthy
  • I feel like everytime she lands a throw I say she "saved the landing", not quite sure why I'm always surprised to see her land it
  • They need more time together to develop the "two shall skate as one" quality, but they've really come along quickly
SP Score: 30.42 (TES) + 25.06 (PCS) = 55.48

2) Natasha Purich & Raymond Schultz (CAN)
     Music: Night-Train
  • Major issues on those SBS jumps
  • Really low catch on the split triple twist
  • Good landing on the throw, but she hardly traveled away from him at all
  • Everything in this program looks so simple, but I'm glad to see they're taking things slowly until they really master their pair elements; difficult will come later
  • I like this music for them, its age appropriate
  • Very cute program from them, it won't get a competitive score, but what a great way for them to get onto the International Senior scene
SP Score: 23.99 (TES) + 21.57 (PCS) = 45.56

3) Marissa Castelli & Simon Shnapir (USA)
     Music: Phantom of the Opera
  • I like this opening, Marissa always brings the drama and it's good to see Simon getting involved
  • Weird timing on the split triple twist
  • She was off on the jump in the air, I'm surprised she saved it from really splatting
  • Nice steps in this softer section of the music
  • Simon has beautiful posture, but Marissa is a little hunched which makes the height difference even more noticeable
  • Fantastic throw on a great musical crescendo
  • I love that they do their signature catch foot position in the lift
  • Great program for them, if only she could have landed the jump
  • I really like this choreography for them, it brings a new level of maturity
SP Score: 26.56 (TES) + 24.37 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 49.93

4) Lubov Iliushechkina & Nodari Maisuradze (RUS)
     Music: Figaro
  • First clean SBS jumps I've seen from them in a while
  • She really cuts off that throw landing, I'd love to see a longer edge
  • Slow exit out of the split triple twist
  • Really slow death spiral
  • They zoom so quickly around the ice but get in and out of the elements so slowly, it's confusifying
  • For soem reason this program seemed so explosive to me last season, but now it seems like a string of mediocre elements frantically thrown together
  • They have very cool entrances and exits for their lifts, but that was a botched exit today, they nearly finished after the music
SP Score: 27.68 (TES) + 26.44 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 53.12

5) Stefania Berton & Ondrej Hotarek (ITA)
     Music: Harlem Nocturne
  • They have such an air of professionalism and theatrics about them
  • They are owning this ice
  • She landed very low, but held onto the SBS 3T
  • He totally missed her body in that split twist and she landed on his shoulder
  • Whoa scary moment, he caught an edge with her over his head upside down and tripped in the rotational lift, awkward exit, but safe exit
  • Nice clean throw
  • I like their spin positions, but they need some more speed
  • I like the intricacies of the footwork and how they it plays into the small musical nuances
  • This pair has really burst onto the scene in the last year, I like their style a lot
SP Score: 30.06 (TES) + 26.17 (PCS) = 56.23

6) Narumi Takahashi & Mervin Tran (JPN)
     Music: Imagine
  • I loved this program when I first saw it at Skate Canada
  • Narumi falls on the SBS toes; her jumping inconsistencies have been a major hindrance for them
  • Huge height on the split 3twist, but not a clean catch
  • Not a lot of height on the throw, but a good clean landing
  • What a fantastic pair spin this is
  • This is my favorite pairs short program of the season, its so beautiful and well composed
  • Mervin outskates her everytime, I'd love to see her rise to his level
SP Score: 31.18 (TES) + 27.71 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 57.89

7) Yuko Kavaguti & Alexander Smirnov (RUS)
     Music: All Alone
  • Scary moment there, Yuko falls and Alexander almost trips over her
  • Messy start, botched landing on the split twist
  • Decent throw there
  • I liked this program a lot at Cup of China, but it seems they're fighting so hard for the elements here that they can't really focus on the character of the piece
  • I like the choreography and Alexander really dances it, whereas Yuko does not
  • That is really an amazing position on that lift
  • I dont' know what it is about her that always seems "off" to me, she looks so frail which is part of it
  • She also rarely straightens her legs the whole way
SP Score: 26.85 (TES) + 29.16 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 55.02

8) Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy (GER)
     Music: Angels & Demons
  • Their costumes are always heinous and this is no exception, but I'll give them a pass because I love them
  • They go after the throw triple axel and she lands on her side short of rotation
  • Good split twist
  • Something looked off in the SBS jumps, I didn't catch what happened but somebody doubled I think
  • This is such a complete program that you hardly even see the elements
  • They have the best spins and the most unique positions
  • I love that every second of the choreography reflects the character of the piece, even down to her hand gesture and arm position in the death spiral
  • They are upset about the fall on that axel, but kudos to them fro trying it early in the season; I bet they have it by worlds
SP Score: 29.00 (TES) + 31.23 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 59.23

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Cup of China Pairs Short Program

1) Taylor Steele & Robert Schultz (CAN)
     Music: Malena soundtrack
  • Really low catch on that split twist
  • Her free leg was a little wild on those side by sides
  • Not a lot of height or distance, but she lands the throw
  • This program isn't doing much for, the choreography and music are really flat
  • They have good basics, now they need to up the speed, difficulty, and performance
SP Score: 26.68 (TES) + 21.57 (PCS) = 48.25

2) Xiaoyu Yu & Yang Jin (CHN)
     Music: The Nutcrakcer
  • Wow does this Waltz of the Flowers music take me back or what
  • Huge split twist, the home crowd is going to love them
  • Perfect SBS 3toes
  • Their unison is exquisite
  • I love the entry into the throw, very clean element with a long edge flowing out
  • Very labored position changes in the lift
  • No speed in the death spiral
  • The ending of the music is too fast, they ran out of gas there
  • Those costumes are very old fashioned, hers is cute but his is so 1994
SP Score: 31.91 (TES) + 22.51 (PCS) = 54.42

3) Klara Kadlecova & Petr Bidar (CZE)
     Music: Flamenco
  • So I don't think purple when I think Flamenco, not sure where this costume idea came from
  • They hit their side by side jumps, ever so slight unison issue
  • He has deeper knees on crossovers than she does which looks slightly awkward
  • Good speed
  • Only a double split twist
  • They look a little spastic out there, he slipped on a crossover and went down
  • She took a very hard fall onto her shoulder on the throw, short of rotation
  • That first half was a struggle, they seem to have their legs under them now
  • They have more experience so their PCS could hold them up over the young Canadians but I'm not sure about that
SP Score: 20.28 (TES) + 20.06 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 38.34

4) Dan Zhang & Hao Zhang (CHN)
     Music: Transylvanian Lullaby
  • This was a very pleasant program at Skate America
  • Very strong opening throw
  •  A little fight for the landing from him, but good SBS jumps
  • They just exude experience out there
  • I don't know how much that program can improve and grow in terms of peaking at Worlds though
SP Score: 30.77 (TES) + 29.80 (PCS) = 60.57

5) Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig (USA)
     Music: The Man I Love
  • Amanda is absolutely exquisite
  • They are perfectly suited for Gershwin, they're an American classic
  • Nice split twist, catch a little low
  • Step out by Amanda on the SBS jumps
  • If they could be consistent, they'd always be a podium threat
  • Really beautiful throw, long flowing edge by Amanda
  • This is really nice choreography
  • Wonderful lift with a great smooth exit
  • This program should score well
  • They looked mostly pleased with that
SP Score: 31.39 (TES) + 26.49 (PCS) = 57.88

6) Kirsten Moore-Towers & Dylan Moscovitch (CAN)
     Music: Borsalino
  • Only a split double twist
  • Speed is one of the top things this team has going for them, and athleticism
  • Shaky on the SBS toes
  • Kirsten was really tilted in the air on that throw, really held onto it
  • That lunge lift has become a signature for them and they do it so well
SP Score: 32.63 (TES) + 28.15 (PCS) = 60.78

7) Wenjing Sui & Cong Han (CHN)
     Music: Country Dance
  • I have to say it, I'm really sick of this program
  • Sui falls on the SBS jump, I'm not worried though because they're good enough to make up those points
  • Really nice twist and throw, smooth as always
  • They've squeezed everything they can out of this program, it's time for something more mature now
SP Score: 33.16 (TES) + 27.84 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 60.00

8) Yuko Kavaguti & Alexander Smirnov (RUS)
     Music: All Alone
  • Yuko looks fantastic
  • Perfect SBS triple toes
  • This is a new style, especially after that terrible short last season
  • Very low catch on the split triple twist
  • Very good flow out of the throw
  • I like teh choreography, especially in the step sequence
  • Fantastic position in that lift with nice smooth exit
  • I hat that death spiral entrance but unfortunately for the audience, that's what earns bonus points and levels
  • Ended after the music
  • A very Peter Tschernyshev program...that much was clear
SP Score: 34.47 (TES) + 30.98 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 64.45

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Skate Canada Pairs Short Program

3:45 Todd Sand, famed US pairs skater here is the technical specialist; he also coaches Marley & Brubaker
3:48 I love Lubov, she's such a tiny little fireball Diva!

1) Jessica Dube & Sebastien Wolfe (CAN)
     Music: Three Hours Pat Midnight
  • I love the simple black costume  with the glitter and details
  • Is he wearing a yellow bracelet? That's distracting
  • Blues piano is certainly a new style for Jessica who was so graceful and elegant with Bryce
  • Only a split double twist, top teams will do triples
  • Different timing take off for SBS triple toes
  • Those jumps will definitely receive a negative GOE
  • Very tilted in the air, but lands the throw nonetheless
  • This program isn't really doing much for me
  • They look nice on the ice together, but they need more time together to get in synch on their jump and spin timing
  • Same coaches as Cynthia Phaneuf
SP Score: 28.97 (TES) +24.26 (PCS) = 53.23

2) Xiaoyu Yu & Yang Jin (CHN)
     Music: The Nutcracker
  • Waltz of the Flowers, that takes me back......
  • This costumes are a little loud for me, but that was an exquisite split triple twist
  • She two-foots the SBS jumps and unison is off
  • Difficult entrance into the throw, she seems to hang and the air, a little tentative on the landing
  • She takes a fall on the footwork sequence, that's unfortunate after their strong start
  • That fall will hurt the level of the footwork
  • My feed is skipping on me so I lost the lift
SP Score: 28.73 (TES) + 21.55 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 49.28

3) Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford (CAN)
     Music: Concierto de Aranjuez
  • This feed is skipping....I'm missing a few elements but I'll call what I can
  • I can't decide if I like the costumes or not, but they do look professional
  • Okay split twist
  • This program seems a little choppy to me, but that may be the feed
  • And I missed the rest
SP Score: 35.37 (TES) + 37.00 (PCS) = 62.37

4) Lubov Iliushechkina & Nodari Maisuradze (RUS)
Music: Figaro from The Barber of Seville
  • I loved this short last season, huge split triple twist
  • Good fast entry into the death spiral
  • I also like their spin entry
  • I just love everything about them, I don't know what it is but I do
  • If my feed would stop slipping I'd give more specific notes
  • Spectacular entrance and lift!!
SP Score: 32.34 (TES) + 25.80 (PCS) = 58.14

5) Paige Lawrence & Rudi Swiegers (CAN)
     Music: Beetlejuice
  • I love this music, the costumes are cool too
  • Love Paige's hands on that opening pair spin
  • Really good speed
  • Low catch on the split triple twist
  • Interesting choreography
  • Slight unison issue on SBS triple toes
  • I'd like to see smoother position changes on the lift and more rotational speed
  • Huge height on the throw, Paige can't hold it and falls
  • Another fall in the footwork, just Paige though
  • Really losing speed now
  • A little strange to end the whole way at the end of the rink
SP Score: 26.80 (TES) + 25.31 (PCS) - 2.00 (DED) = 50.11

6) Tatiana Volosozhar & Maxim Trankov (RUS)
Music: Bring Me Back To Life by Evanescence
  • Interesting entrance to center ice, perhaps they think they're hip hop dancers with those chest pops
  • This arrangement is very heavy on the synthesizer
  • That split triple twist was monstrous
  • Odd costume choices, hello studded pleather
  • Nailed the SBS 3toes
  • Huge Throw, maybe a two-foot
  • Really good lift position from her, she really arches her back
  • This is a very Morozov program, lots of superfluous hand  movements
  • Really nice spin
  • They look great together and have great technical elements, but this program was not for me
  • Huge crowd pleaser!
SP Score: 39.39 (TES) + 31.03 (PCS) = 70.42

7) Narumi Takahashi & Mervin Tran (JPN)
     Music: Imagine
  • This is a gorgeous program if they can hit the elements
  • Their choreography is beautiful, it looks more ice dance than pairs
  • Narumi puts her hand down and spins out, but beautiful SBS toes overall
  • HUGE split triple twist, he even has time to put his arms down
  • Two-foot and turn out on the throw but she kept it upright
  • Mervin is a fantastic partner, Narumi needs to keep working on her singles elements
  • That lift is just fantastic overall
  • I love this program overall, fantastic musical selection
  • That is easily the best death spiral entrance I've ever seen
  • Not their best, but no fall deductions
SP Score: 33.01 (TES) + 27.59 (PCS) = 60.60

8) Wenjing Sui & Cong Han (CHN)
Music: Country Dance by Josh Turner
  • I wish they would have done a new, more mature short program
  • Unison off in the SBS jumps
  • Good split triple twist
  • This piece is so fast, but they really keep up well
  • Great throw, you just can't say enough about this team's technical elements
  • And they get so into the performance as well
  • The position changes on the lift need to be a lot smoother and with faster rotation on his part
SP Score: 32.48 (TES) + 26.75 (PCS) = 59.23

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Skate America Pairs Short Program [LIVE BLOG]

Wow, Dan Zhang is super tall now!!

1) Caydee Denney & John Coughlin (USA)
    Music: East of Eden
  • I don't like her lipstick, but I like her dress a lot
  • it still hurts that she's not Caitlin
  • That triple twist was huge with a very clean catch
  • Nice clean triple toes, slight unison issues
  • They seem to have a very strong personal connection to one another for only being together a few months
  • Very slow in the footwok, speed will pick up as they get more experience
  • A little bit of a wonky entrance into that overhead lift
  • I don't know how Caydee saved that throw, very tilted in the air
  • I still hate that she isn't Caitlin, but that was a solid skate
SP Score: 33.82 (TES) + 25.80 (PCS) = 59.62

2) Tiffany Vise & Don Baldwin (USA)
Music: Pirates of the Caribbean by Hans Zimmer
  • They only do a split double twist, so that will her their TES
  • Very good height on the throw triple loop, hand down
  • I think it's interesting to watch teams that jump and spin in opposite directions
  • Here head almost hit the ice on that death spiral
  • I really like their speed and edging on the footwork
  • She tripped up a bit at the end, unfortunate
SP Score: 27.12 (TES) + 24.43 (PCS) = 51.55

3) Mary-Beth Marley & Rockne Brubaker (USA)
    Music: Singin in the Rain
  • I love that they are doing a cute, jazzy short program
  • Very good unison on those side by side triple toes
  • Very cute choreography, loving it so far
  • Really good height on the the split triple twist, a little bit of a rough catch
  • Hands down maybe on that throw triple lutz, but kudos to them for trying a harder throw
  • I am just smitten with this program
  • Very great energy throughout
  • Nice lift
  • They showed AMAZING improvement
SP Score: 29.68 (TES) + 26.48 (PCS) = 56.16

4) Dan Zhang & Hao Zhang (CHN)
Music: A Transylvanian Lullaby by John Morris
  • Fantastic throw triple loop, that's what happens when you practice throwing over couches
  • This is signature Lori Nichol choreography
  • Other than lacking some speed, they look just as good as they did before they took their year off
  • I'm not in love with this program, it is a little bland for me
  • They are clearly a class above all the other skaters we've seen
  • That was an abrupt ending to the program
SP Score: 34.17 (TES) +28.68  (PCS) = 62.85

5) Kirsten  Moore-Towers & Dylan Moscovitch (CAN)
     Music: Borsalino by Claude Bolling
  • Fast rotation on the  split twist, but not a clean catch
  • Good side by side triple toes
  • That throw triple loop was so tilted, she saved it
  • I love their lift entry with Dylan in the lunge
  • This program has some nice potential, but they can really up the performance ante
  • That was scary when she stepped over the back of his skate boot, looked like a sliced achilles waiting to happen
SP Score: 32.30 (TES) + 27.40 (PCS) = 59.60

6) Maylin Hausch & Daniel Wendne (GER)
    Music: Music by John Miles
  • Is it just me or does Daniel look a bit like Alexander Gazsi?
  • Bad catch on that split triple twist, but I like how they linked it to their throw triple salchow
  • Fall by Maylin on the triple toe
  • I'm hating this 80s-tastic musical selections, and how do black and white costumes fit?
  • Trip by Daniel on the footwork sequence, they just look a bit frantic for me
  • Her positions in the overhead spins could really use work
  • I really like the ending pose
SP Score: 25.63 (TES) + 24.31 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 48.94

7) Vera Bazarova & Yuri Larionov (RUS)
    Music: Tosca by Puccini
  • I always forget that Vera is so young, only 18
  • I love they're elegance, if they can just land their elements, they're elite status
  • Wow Yuri actually fell this time, usually it's Vera who struggles
  • Did she die her hair darker?
  • I've been saying for many a season that they remind me of Gordeeva & Grinkov, but not when they fall like that
  • Clean throw triple flip, a harder throw than many
  • I like their death spiral and that pair spin is to die for
  • Very unique entrance and position changes into their overhead lift
  • This is lovely choreography, not a moment is wasted
  • Stumble by Yuri at the end, they looked unsettled out there
SP Score: 32.43 (TES) + 28.20 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 59.62

8) Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy (GER)
Music: Angels & Demons by Hans Zimmer
  • Wow, Aliona is all about the fake skin
  • I love Ingo!!
  • Let me guess, she's the angel and he's the demon?
  • They have a very innovative coach which is great to see
  • She ate it in the throw triple axel, very tilted, not sure if they'll call it rotated or not
  • Struggle coming out of the split triple twist
  • She two-footed the triple toe
  • Granted she took a very hard fall on the throw, could understandably be shaken
  • Their pair spin is so cool, loving it!
  • So far no heinous death spirals, I'm okay with that sideways position
  • This program is going to be outstanding come the Grand Prix Final, just needs some work
SP Score: 29.48 (TES) + 30.97 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 59.45
