2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Cup of China Pairs Free Skate LIVE BLOG

1) Klara Kadlecova & Petr Bidar (CZE)
Music: Phantom of the Opera

Rough around the edges but better than the short by miles this far
Started out with nice speed, but running out of gas halfway through
That was an interesting spiral into a very abrupt ending

FS Score: 42.09 (TES) +41.52 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 82.61
Total Score: 38.34 (SP) + 82.61 (FS) = 120.95

2) Taylor Steele & Robert Schultz (CAN)
Music: Piano Concerto in F by Gershwin

Nice start, they have nice unison and well-matched lines
Good s peed
The throw needs much more height
She needs to really stretch out and point her feet in those lifts
Touch second throw, can't hold the landing
Their second set of jumps come very late in the program
They end with the spins, they have a lot of work to do to get to the top level, but they have a lot of promise

FS Score: 49.85 (TES) +44.74 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 93.59
Total Score: 48.25 (SP) + (FS) = 141.84

3) Xiaoyu Yu & Yang Jin (CAN)
Music: Requiem for a Dream

Why did they pick these costumes for this music? It makes no sense
That being said, amazing split twist and SBS jumps
I like the set up for the 1st throw and the fact that they do both back to back
She really has to hang onto both to control the height
A very flashy program overall, should land solidly in 1st

FS Score: 63.11 (TES) + 45.43 (PCS) = 108.54
Total Score: 54.42 (SP) + 108.54 (FS) = 162.96

4) Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig (USA)
Music: Daphnis and Chloe, Reverie

Please let this be clean, please let this be clean
I love the softness of the costumes
Nice speed in and out of the split twist
Amanda stumbles out of the SBS jump, that's almost always the story
Nice throw landing
Good double axel sequence, slight unison issues
This is a beautifully choreographed piece!
THey are so pleasant and soothing to watch
Great speed and flow across the ice, nice landing from Amanda on the 2nd throw
I love that they save ll the lifts until the 2nd half where the'll get bonus points
Their lifts are the best I've ever seen
Nice spin positioning
Very nice piece aside from Amanda's jumping error

FS Score: 60.51 (TES) + 53.24 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 112.75
Total Score: 57.88 (SP) + 112.75 (FS) = 170.63

5) Wenjing Sui & Cong Han (CHN)
Music: The Soul of Flamenco

They are big time here in China
Split quad twist, he is majorly pitching forward and she sits it down when he puts her back on the ice
She face plants in the SBS jumps and misses her combination
Huge throw landed on solid legs
Sometimes I feel like he just tosses her around without much concern for how she gets there
We've come to expect such perfection from them that we forget they're so young
She really fought for the landing on that second throw
They both botch the landings on the second SBS jump
An off day for them for sure, perhaps the home pressure has been too much
That was very very messy from them

FS Score: 56.66 (TES) + 54.81 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 109.47
Total Score: 60.00 (SP) + 109.47 (FS) = 169.47

6) Dan Zhang & Hao Zhang (CHN)
Music: Totentanz

I really hate this piece of music
Dan falls on the SBS jumps, I believe she did at Skate America too
They got dangerously close together on those spins
This is really slow, she's barely muscling out those throws
This program may be fine now, but it won't hold up against the best at Worlds

FS Score: 56.07 (TES) + 59.03 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 117.10
Total Score: 60.57 (SP) + 117.10 (FS) = 177.67

7) Kirsten Moore-Towers & Dylan Moscovitch (CAN)
Music: Henry V

This is beautiful music, a step in the right direction for them
Kirsten falls hard on the 2nd half of the jumping pass
Only a split double twist, hardly any lift
Labored entrance into that lift
She really fights hard to hold onto that second jumping pass
Kirsten falls on the throw, I don't know if she fully rotated it or not
This has been tough and go, not the skate they had at Skate America
Her positions have improved, especially in the carry lift
Hand down on the 2nd throw
That lunge press lift has become a signature of their programs right at the end, very nice cartwheel exit

FS Score: 56.47 (TES) + 56.79 (PCS) - 2.00 (DED) = 111.26
Total Score: 60.78 (SP) + 111.26 (FS) = 172.04

8) Yuko Kavaguti & Alexander Smirnov (RUS)
Music: Clair de Lune

Slight unison issue on the jumps, Yuko was a bit wild
Low catch on the split twist
Nice throw
This is a very easy program to watch, it has great flow to it
Drifting apart on the spins a bit
Good double axels
I couldn't tell if she put a hand down on that throw or now
Really innovative lift positions
Very clean piece from them

FS Score: 58.53 (TES) + 63.76 (PCS) = 122.29
Total Score: 64.45 (SP) + 122.29 (FS) = 186.74

1) Richard Dornbush (USA)
Music: A Fistful of Dollars, The Lone Ranger

Nice Quad toe, just a hand down
Solid triple lutz
3a-3t combination, stumble out of the 2nd jump
He's a good spinner as well
He really does have the whole package and he'll continue to grow and improve as he matures
Nice big triple axel there
I really do love this program
So far so good on the technique
He really goes after this footwork, I love the choreography of the whole piece
It's a very American program, how will it hold up in International competition?
Good set Ricky!

Total Score: 62.93 (SP) + 142.34 (FS) = 205.27

2) Kevin Reynolds (CAN)
Music: Chrono Trigger

A struggle on the jumps, two falls thus far
Jumps are his strength, he's in for a tough ride if he can't land them
That was a tough program for him
After the falls on the jumps he couldn't get himself back into it
The audience was really wowed by his final headless scratch spin

FS Score: 79.30 (TES) + 62.80 (PCS) - 2.00 (DED) = 140.10
Total Score: 64.31 (SP) + 140.10 (FS) = 204.41

3) Jialiang Wu (CHN)
Music: Tango

I'd love a costume deduction
Huge 3 axel combo, shaky in the air but he found his feet
Stumble and fall on 2nd 3A attempt
I wouldn't call this a program, it's really just a string of jumps
I thought the music stopped there for a minute
2A-2-2 sequence, the landings are getting really messy at this point
A designer needs to come in and re-costume the entire Chinese team
He kind of looks like Hao Zhang

4) Nan Song (CHN)
Music: Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2

A really good jumper this guy
Huge Quad toe combo and solo Quad toe
Plus he attempts to actually put together and perform a program unlike the other Chinese men
He really is quite a charming skater to watch
He'll need more speed and better choreography if he ever hopes to contend for medals
It's good to see the Quad is alive and well in China
The upside down butt spin is big in China, I wish it would die

FS Score: 86.46 (TES) + 67.58 (PCS) = 154.03
Total Score: 72.72 (SP) + 154.03 (FS) = 226.75

5) Nobunari Oda (JPN)
Music: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg

To Quad or not to Quad?
His attention to artistry and interpretation has improved greatly
Huge 3a-2-2 with the softest knees of anyone out there
3lz-3t
I love the footwork out of that triple loop
Huge stumble, not sure if it was quite a fall or not
He needed to perfect to win without the Quad, now he needs to hope for mistakes from the rest of the field
Great triple axel, lands so low in the knees I just die for it
He lands so low, he practically get's eaten up by the fog
I appreciate that he is now paying attention to things other than just the jumps
Fast steps into a very abrupt ending

FS Score: 74.30 (TES) + 76.16 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 149.46
Total Score: 77.65 (SP) + 149.46 (FS) = 227.11

6) Jeremy Abbott (USA)
Music: Exogenesis

Went for a Quad toe and sat it down, it looked rotated to me
Nice glide out of the triple axel
I'm dying over his toe point on the low sit spin
Wonderful use of the upper body and overall carriage
Triple lutz into footwork
This is wonderful choreography, not a moment is wasted
Doubled the 2nd triple axel attempt
3lutz-2-2 combo
He is carrying really nice speed and overall flow across the ice
He seems to be in great shape, doesn't look tired at all here in the final section
This is a really well paced, smartly composed program
Yuka will be pleased!

FS Score: 69.67 (TES) + 80.50 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 149.17
Total Score: 79.32 (SP) + 149.17 (FS) = 228.49

7) Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN)
Music: Romeo & Juliet

Huge Quad there
Huge triple axel
He is skating like a bat out of hell, he needs to calm down or he'll run out of gas
This kid is amazing, he has the whole package and he may be the one to challenge Chan once he can learn to reign in his power
Very hard fall there, nearly a face plant and a hard time getting up, lead to another hard fall that he struggles to get up from
Two major splats and he'll still score quite well on the strength of the rest of the program
I think he is the only man doing a Bielmann nowadays

FS Score: 72.80 (TES) + 75.36 (PCS) - 2.00 (DED) = 145.16
Total Score: 81.37 (SP) + 145.16 (FS) = 226.53

8) Artur Gachinski (RUS)
Music: Interview with a Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula

Eats it on his opening Quad
Wild triple axel, stumble out
At this point he's given away the 2 point lead he had in the short on the fall and the steps out
This step sequence is so slow, he's practically walking out there
Opened up another jump
He is just like Plushenko, cat-like in that he can save many jumps that are really ugly and contorted in the air and still find his feet
He looks really tired whereas Jeremy maintained his energy level throughout
That was a very messy program, if Jeremy doesn't win this is a problem

FS Score: 69.04 (TES) + 72.86 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 140.90
Total Score: 81.64 (SP) + 140.90 (FS) = 222.54

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Cup of China Ladies Free Skate

1) Quiying Zhu (CHN)
Music: Scent of a Woman

She is so tentative going into her jumps, I really want to attack them with more speed
The jumps really need more height
I'd like to see more speed on the spins, some of the positions are nice
The step sequence needs more levels to make it exciting to watch
My overall note is she needs more attack
That was a weak layback spin
She is happy with the skate, good for her!

FS Score: 35.16 (TES) +38.13 (PCS) = 73.29
Total Score: 35.28 (SP) + 73.29 (FS) = 108.57

2) Ksenia Makarova (RUS)
Music: Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend, I Wanna Be Loved By You

I love this program and just want to see it done well
Trip and fall out of the triple lutz, legs were crossed on landing
The choreography is so playful, love this gorgeous costume
Lands the 3-2, but really lacks height
Wild free leg on the triple loop
Her hair looks to be falling down and it's distracting
The jumps she's landing are hardly getting off the ground, where has her technique gone?
This costume is fantastic, a great replica of the original
The ending is abrupt, but I like the program as a whole
Certainly some underrotations there, but one fall is a huge upgrade from her Skate America free skate

FS Score: 46.01 (TES) + 52.56 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 97.57
Total Score: 45.90 (SP) + 97.57 (FS) = 143.37

3) Christina Gao (USA)
Music: Libertango

I'm sick of this music, but I'll give her a chance
Her crossovers seem very short and staccato, not sure if that's a skill issue or a style choice
Nice 3-3 to open
Conquered the double axel that caused a fall in the short
Fall, I missed the jump
I like her spin variations and the fact that they show off her long limbs
That is a very Mao Asada-esque costume
Awkward turn out of the triple flip
Short landing on the triple loop
She is giving away a lot of GOE points on these less than beautiful landings
I wish she's pick up the speed and try to emote more
She needs to bend the knees more and go deeper onto the edges
Good attempt at interpretation in this step sequence

FS Score: 53.89 (TES) + 47.60 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 100.49
Total Score: 51.99 (SP) + 100.49 (FS) = 152.48

4) Valentina Marchei (ITA)
Music: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

This program seems oddly junior-ish for a woman of her age
This as a free and the energetic upbeat short are too similar programs for the same season
As in the short, crossovers with hand gestures are not transitions
She is popping jumps left and right, tack on a fall as well
Sato & Dungjen did not perform magic with her as they did with Czisny
The gloves with this costume are distracting for me

FS Score: 32.76 (TES) + 49.68 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 81.44
Total Score: 52.42 (SP) + 81.44 (FS) = 133.86

5) Bingwa Geng (CHN)
Music: Sylvia

Two-foot on opening triple
Turns a simple double axel into a 3-jump combination
I'm not familiar with this music, but I really like it
I like the headless-variation on the I-spin, but the leg must be pulled in closer if she's going to perform it
This program is slow and lacking conviction like the rest of the skaters in this group
She's picking up the energy slightly here at the end, but ti's a little to little to late at this point
She's not terribly upset, but not terribly happy either with that skate

FS Score: 45.38 (TES) + 45.10 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 89.48
Total Score: 52.61 (SP) + 89.48 (FS) =142.09

6) Kexin Zhang (CHN)
Music: En la Cueva

This girl is a jumper, nice 3-3 there
I like the costume, be it loud, but it doesn't fit with the music
She needs a lot more speed
She really does have all the jumps, nice rotation
She's missing the components and interpretation of the more experienced Geng
Good spins, I'm pleasantly surprised by her!
She could relax her hands more, they get stuck in some funny positions
Solid skate, she'll be quite pleased!

FS Score: 54.14 (TES) + 46.33 (PCS) = 100.47
Total Score: 52.85 (SP) + 100.47 (FS) = 153.32

7) Kanako Murakami (JPN)
Music: Violin Concerto

I love Kanako's dress, this is very new look for her this sesaon
Low landing on the opening triple, if that was supposed to be her combination, I hope she tacks it on later
She seems unsettled out there, perhaps she isn't quite soft enough for this type of program
I do appreciate her effort in working toward a more mature program
Her jumps don't seem to have their usual spring, but she may not yet have adjusted to her growth spurt

FS Score: 44.10 (TES) + 54.01 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 97.11
Total Score: 53.09 (SP) + 97.11 (FS) = 150.20

8) Adelina Sotnikova (RUS)
Music: Liebestraum

I'm on the edge of my seat!
3-3 to open, it hardly takes any effort for her
She has a nice knee bend and good edging
I love the costume, it is very age appropriate and fits the music
She is looking solid out there, and much more mature that Tuktamisheva
Popped a jump, signs of nerves?
Really strange landing, may be counted as a fall
She is letting go of precious GOE marks on these landings
Really good spinning ability, another place where she tops Tuktamisheva
Nice emotion and interpretation from her, it would be a great debut for any other skater
Her facial expressions remind me of Sasha Cohen

FS Score: 51.69 (TES) + 54.52 (PCS) = 106.21
Total Score: 53.74 (SP) + 106.21 (FS) = 159.95

9) Mirai Nagasu (USA)
Music: Spartacus

Mirai looks relaxed out there, but almost to the point of being too casual in her movements
So far so good after 4 jumping passes
Wavering a little in her camel sequence
I'd like to see that spread eagle ride out a little longer on that great part of the music
She really is nailing it so far, it looks like we've gotten "Good Mirai" today!
Wow, a clean program from Mirai is something we've not seen in a while!
When she's good, she's GOOD

FS Score: 55.64 (TES) + 56.62 (PCS) = 112.26
Total Score: 60.96 (SP) + 112.26 (FS) = 173.22

10) Carolina Kostner (ITA)
Music: Concerto NO. 23 by Mozart

Very wobbly landing for Caro, but she gets it under control
Nice smooth easy program so far, let's keep it that way
I appreciate the flow that she normally has out of her jumps
Pointing the foot would do her a lot of good to extend an already long leg line
And she's happy with that!

FS Score: 56.95 (TES) + 63.31 (PCS) = 120.26
Total Score: 61.88 (SP) + 120.26 (FS) = 182.14

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Cup of China Free Dance

1) Charlotte Lichtman & Dean Copely (USA)
Music: Austin Powers

They were let down by their short, they want a strong free to make up for it
Charlotte needs to be styled differently, the long ponytail is very junior-ish
This is a great program to push their presentation skills, similar to Cabaret from Chock/Zuerlein last season
Solid twizzle sets
Great straight line lift, keeping the character of the program
This looks like a different team than I saw out there yesterday, much more confident-looking
I love the rise and fall of the rotational lift
They look pleased with that skate
Does Austin Powers translate to China?

FD Score: 37.65 (TES) + 31.70 (PCS) = 69.35
Total Score: 40.26 (SD) + 69.35 (FD) = 109.61

2) Emily Samuelson & Todd Gilles
Music: Stairway to Heaven

I love Stairway but not this version
Oh hello there Samuelson toe point, I've missed you
That dress is 100 times more flattering on her than her short dance dress
They're really lacking in speed, but they're so new together
Great lift positions, we'll be looking for more seamless transitions as they get more time together
Really strong curve lift, amazing strength needed form both of them for that
I like the program as a whole, but I hate the singer

FD Score: 34.05 (TES) + 32.05 (PCS) - 3.00 (DED) = 63.10
Total Score: 43.64 (SD) + 63.10 (FD) = 106.74

3) Xintong Huang & Xun Zheng (CHN)
Music: Libertango

She looks like Cathy Reed
This is quickly becoming the new "Carmen" in the cannon of overused figure skating music
I appreciate their aggressive approach to the piece
That rotational split lift is interesting but she really needs to point the feet
I like that legs over the head entry into the curve lift, that is different
The fog is back!
Technically it was fine, but their performance and lack of chemistry left me feeling cold

FD Score: 38.34 (TES) +36.70 (PCS) = 75.04
Total Score: 45.07 (SD) + 75.04 (FD) = 120.11

4) Xiaoyang Yu & Chen Wang (CHN)
Music: Howl's Moving Castle

Slightly mismatched free leg in the twizzles
This is really slow
Straight line lift-very labored position changes, barely hits the final one
Really lost speed in the spin
I'm not understanding the story of the piece, perhaps it is something cultural?
That lift with the woman on her stomach over the man's shoulder is quickly becoming overdone
Really ran out of gas at the end

FD Score: 33.57 (TES) + 33.66 (PCS) - (DED) = 67.23
Total Score: 48.36 (SD) + 67.23 (FD) = 115.59

5) Pernelle Carron & Lloyd Jones (FRA)
Music: Jazz Night

He is such a cutie, I just love it
They remind me a lot of Tobias & Stagniunas
Really slow twizzles
He is the star of this team, must be a theme in French ice dancing
That curve lift was fairly simple
I really liked that rotational lift with him in a low position and her in a plank, innovative]
She has nice upper body carriage
Really fast spin and they keep that speed going in the position changes
She gets her legs a bit tangled in the drop splits
I feel like their losing the finesse right here at the end, it's gotten a little wild and out of control
Needs some attention to detail, but really nice skate overall

FD Score: 38.19 (TES) +40.37 (PCS) = 78.56
Total Score: 52.41 (SD) + 78.56 (FD) = 130.97

6) Penny Coomes & Nicholas Buckland (GBR)
Music: Viva Elvis Medley

Belbin & Agosto did a great Elvis program as youngsters
Those twizzles were all kinds of off, speed and positions were off
Really quick in the position changes in the rotational lift, a little sloppy
Nicholas Buckland is such a diva, he's the star of this team as well
This program is really speedy but it is sloppy, where is the finesse?
I don't like his costume, it looks like Ricky Dornbush's western free skate
He lifts her like it is nothing, he'd be a really good pairs partner
I don't know if it's the sound system or what but, this arrangement sounds horrendous on my end
Oh wow, really hard fall from both of them right at the end out of a lift
That program was messy, didnt' tell a story, did nothing for me overall

FD Score: 39.92 (TES) +39.58 (PCS) - 2.00 (DED) = 76.50
Total Score: 53.89 (SD) + 76.50 (FD) = 130.39

7) Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani (USA)
Music: Glenn Miller Medley

Maia is beginning to look like an ice diva out there!
That is how you do a drop split
I think Maia has grown a little taller this season!
Great twizzle set as always
Really great speed and footwork
They pay close attention to every detail
Their body positions and carriage have improved as well
Maia does indeed have the vest red dress of the season thus far
They have nice edge quality, could go even deeper
Great rotational lift, same on they've done in the past
Nice crisp ending pose, finished exactly on the beat and with one another
If they don't win Gold, I hope they at least win the free

FD Score: 43.14 (TES) + 48.47 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 90.61
Total Score: 57.79 (SD) + 90.61 (FD) = 148.40

8) Ekaterina Bobrova & Dmitri Soloviev (RUS)
Music: Walpurgis Night

Poor guy, he can't even see on that lift with her dress over his head
Why are these costumes necessary?
Good twizzle set
She always looks hunched over at the waist, must be a good ab workout
Her costume is just so distracting, the gloves don't help at all
This program is fine, but nothing that exciting
This looks like Russian ice dance of the 1990s
I can barely stand to watch her pitch forward like that
Doesn't she can skate into her knees without destroying her whole body line
Very awkward final lift, she gets stuck between his legs in he position changes

FD Score: 45.95 (TES) + 51.84 (PCS) = 97.79
Total Score: 65.73 (SD) + 97.79 (FD) = 163.52

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Cup of China Pairs Short Program

1) Taylor Steele & Robert Schultz (CAN)
Music: Malena soundtrack

Really low catch on that split twist
Her free leg was a little wild on those side by sides
Not a lot of height or distance, but she lands the throw
This program isn't doing much for, the choreography and music are really flat
They have good basics, now they need to up the speed, difficulty, and performance

SP Score: 26.68 (TES) + 21.57 (PCS) = 48.25

2) Xiaoyu Yu & Yang Jin (CHN)
Music: The Nutcrakcer

Wow does this Waltz of the Flowers music take me back or what
Huge split twist, the home crowd is going to love them
Perfect SBS 3toes
Their unison is exquisite
I love the entry into the throw, very clean element with a long edge flowing out
Very labored position changes in the lift
No speed in the death spiral
The ending of the music is too fast, they ran out of gas there
Those costumes are very old fashioned, hers is cute but his is so 1994

SP Score: 31.91 (TES) + 22.51 (PCS) = 54.42

3) Klara Kadlecova & Petr Bidar (CZE)
Music: Flamenco

So I don't think purple when I think Flamenco, not sure where this costume idea came from
They hit their side by side jumps, ever so slight unison issue
He has deeper knees on crossovers than she does which looks slightly awkward
Good speed
Only a double split twist
They look a little spastic out there, he slipped on a crossover and went down
She took a very hard fall onto her shoulder on the throw, short of rotation
That first half was a struggle, they seem to have their legs under them now
They have more experience so their PCS could hold them up over the young Canadians but I'm not sure about that

I don't know how much that program can improve and grow in terms of peaking at Worlds though

5) Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig (USA)
Music: The Man I Love

Amanda is absolutely exquisite
They are perfectly suited for Gershwin, they're an American classic
Nice split twist, catch a little low
Step out by Amanda on the SBS jumps
If they could be consistent, they'd always be a podium threat
Really beautiful throw, long flowing edge by Amanda
This is really nice choreography
Wonderful lift with a great smooth exit
This program should score well
They looked mostly pleased with that

6) Kirsten Moore-Towers & Dylan Moscovitch (CAN)
Music: Borsalino

Only a split double twist
Speed is one of the top things this team has going for them, and athleticism
Shaky on the SBS toes
Kirsten was really tilted in the air on that throw, really held onto it
That lunge lift has become a signature for them and they do it so well

SP Score: 32.63 (TES) + 28.15 (PCS) = 60.78

7) Wenjing Sui & Cong Han (CHN)
Music: Country Dance

I have to say it, I'm really sick of this program
Sui falls on the SBS jump, I'm not worried though because they're good enough to make up those points
Really nice twist and throw, smooth as always
They've squeezed everything they can out of this program, it's time for something more mature now

8) Yuko Kavaguti & Alexander Smirnov (RUS)
Music: All Alone

Yuko looks fantastic
Perfect SBS triple toes
This is a new style, especially after that terrible short last season
Very low catch on the split triple twist
Very good flow out of the throw
I like teh choreography, especially in the step sequence
Fantastic position in that lift with nice smooth exit
I hat that death spiral entrance but unfortunately for the audience, that's what earns bonus points and levels
Ended after the music
A very Peter Tschernyshev program...that much was clear

Good triple-triple to start things off
The Chinese Men have always been good jumpers, where he'll be lacking is in the components mark
I really liked his music choice
Sorry for the lack of commentary, my feed cut out mid-program

2) Nan Song (CHN)
Music: Requiem for a Dream

NICE QUAD
He too is a very strong jumper but will be lacking in the components mark
This is a big day for the Chinese men, they don't get much international exposure
Good effort on the footwork
I hate that butt in the air spin
The home crowd will love that!

3) Richard Dornbush (USA)
Music: The Fifth

Come on Ricky (my mom loves him!)
Ricky start, fall right off the top
Hand down on the triple axel
He had really awesome speed
I appreciate that he is really going after the program, but he looks a little wild out there, there are times when you need to reign it in
That being said I do like this program and he needs to find the appropriate intensity level, he'll get there by Nationals

4) Kevin Reynolds (CAN)
Music: Chambermaid Swing

Look for some big Quad action to come
Nice toe-tapping footwork to start off
4s-3t like it was nothing
His hair is too much for me, I just can't stop thinking of Frodo
Wild turn out of the triple axel, tries to save it and does a few turns and puts a hand down
I like that knee down entry into the triple lutz
He has moments of performance, but slips in and out a lot
His spins really hold him back, he'd do well to work with somebody like Lambiel or Buttle to teach him some artistry

5) Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN)
Music: Etude in D sharp minor patetico

Only 16, a baby in Men's figure skating but so strong already
I love this program
4toe!!
Really nice triple axel, he has really good flow on the edges out of his jumps
He looks like Johnny Weir out there in that donut spin in baby blue
Huge 3f-3t
Really beautiful footwork
Good sit spin variations, I like the arms out at the sides
He is really something special, he has a bit of polishing to do but I bet anything he'll be a World champ someday

Quad-triple, messy and slanted in the air just like his idol Plushenko
That was a very ugly spread eagle into that triple axel
That broken leg camel spin is horrendous looking, as is that wrapped sit spin
I feel about this like I feel about a Plushenko program; good jumps, not much else happening

8) Nobunari Oda (JPN)
Music: Memphis Soul Stew

Gigantic triple axel, he has the softest knees of any skater I've seen
Nice big triple-triple
But where is the Quad?
Loved that little West Side Story jump!

He has the springiest legs I've ever seen, like Tigger
Perfect technique on the jumps, and more performance than I'v seen from him in a while

2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: Cup of China Ladies Short Program LIVE BLOG

1) Kexin Zhang (CHN)
Music: Piano Concerto No. 3 by Rachmaninov

The Chinese ladies struggled last Grand Prix season, I'd like to see them do well here at home
3-3 attempt, I couldn't tell from the angle if it was rotated
Hand down on a very tilted triple lutz
She is very stiff in her upper body, some ballet would go a long way for her
She needs to extend the movement even through the fingertips
Nice donut spin position
Footwork into a double axel, so far clan on the jumping
I want to see more use of levels in this footwork, but she has begun to relax her upper body
She'll be happy with that skate

SP Score: 31.47 (TES) + 21.38 (PCS) = 52.85

2) Quiying Zhu (CHN)
Music: Nutrckacker

She is gorgeous!
From that costume I was expecting the Plum pas de deux music and I was correct!
Fall on the first triple attempt, just not nearly enough speed and or height
Triple-double completed, but still lacking speed and height
She goes into the double axel almost at a stand-still
She is so tentative going into these elements
Her hands are really broken at the wrist which really disrupts the arm line she's creating
Spins are a bit wobbly, traveling a bit
No don't pick your skirt out of your butt on the ice!

SP Score: 16.40 (TES) + 19.88 (PCS) - 1.00 (DED) = 35.28

3) Bingwa Geng (CHN)
Music: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

I love this costume, it's very dynamic
I hate this overhead camera angle, but nice 3-2
She has more speed and is more aggressive than the other more delicate Chinese ladies
That catch foot spin should be much more stretched if she's going to attempt it
The spins really lack speed
That ina bauer needs much more stretch, clean double axel
That fog on the ice is really distracting
Nice layback into final ending position
An easy skater to watch

SP Score: 29.66 (TES) +22.95 (PCS) = 52.61

4) Adelina Sotnikova (RUS)
Music: Bolero

Very strong opening stance, drastically different from her programs of last season
She is coming out very aggressive
Fall on the triple lutz, had no speed coming out
I hope she's smart enough to tack on a combo to another jump
And she does add a 2T to the 3F
Very fast spinning and nice position changes
That lutz looked rotated, so she'll just lose the 1 point deduction and some GOE marks
Solid double axel
I'm loving her spins, that is where she is much stronger than Elizaveta
Her step sequence movements are a little repetitive for me, but I appreciate that she is giving it her all
That low sit spin variation is rally interesting
She is not happy with that, but should still bring in a strong score

5) Christina Gao (USA)
Music: To Love You More

I like her even more now that she's tall, is that strange?
She's getting the Yuna look!
3F-3t, looked solid to me
Slow approach to the double axel, can't keep it on her feet
I like this program on her
I'd like a stronger flow out of that triple lutz
She has lovely spin positions but lost a lot of speed by the time she hit the Bielman
I'd like to see more facial expression, she's in the ballpark here on her step sequence
Aren't bangs really distracting for a figure skater?

6) Valentina Marchei (ITA)

Yuka is here for Team Detroti, no surprise b/c of her connection with Jeremy Abbott
Again, I hate the braid, it's immature for her age
Her opening combo took off from and landed on very straight legs
She came out firing today, seems to really have her legs under her
This program doesn't do much for me, the transitions are really just crossovers with sassy facial expressions
She's landed all of the jumps, but none of them really have much height at all
Pretty quick rotation on the spins, she must be studying Alissa

SP Score: 26.46 (TES) + 25.96 (PCS) = 52.42

7) Ksenia Makarova (RUS)
Music: Maria and the Violin's String

What a lovely program this is if she can just stay upright
The choreography is fantastic, the opening is so unique
Fall out of the opening 3F, I really don't know that the coaching change did her any favors
This audience really gasps when a skater falls
Step out of the triple loop,won't get full credit
I don't know where this girl's mind is, if I had that choreography I wouldn't be throwing away jumps
This poor girl, she's so lovely if she could get her mind in the game and learn to compete

SP Score: 20.44 (TES) + 26.46 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 45.90

8) Kanako Murakami (JPN)
Music: Violin Muse

Wow she's grown up since last season!
3lz-3t, 2nd jump likely underrotated and maybe two-footed
Triple loop, UR probably
This is a much more mature program for her, she's improved her sense of interpretation
A bit of a funny layback position; broken leg line
Her hands are a bit stiff for me, softening them would do wonders for her arm line
Double axel, good to see she's maintained her jumps even with the growth spurt

SP Score: 25.80 (TES) + 27.29 (PCS) = 53.09

9) Mirai Nagasu (USA)
Music: Danzarin

Lord I don't even know what to think anymore when Mirai steps onto the ice
It looks like good Mirai came out to skate today, all jumps landed
She really does a fantastic job of not traveling at all on that layback spin
I like that camel variation into the donut that she does
Sassy Mirai is out there today, Frank is looking on as seriously as ever
I like this step sequence a lot
Mirai is one of the best spinners around in terms of speeding up rotation as she goes

SP Score: 31.75 (TES) + 29.21 (PCS) = 60.96

10) Carolina Kostner (ITA)
Music: Alegretto from Trio No. 2 by Shostakovitch

The illusion mesh is still horrible but the costume as a whole has grown on me
The more I watch it I like this program
She went for the 3-3, wasn't watching closely enough for rotation
She really carries a lot of speed with those long legs
Two hands down on the triple loop
Nice sharp double axel
I appreciate the way the subtleties of the choreography mirror the music
Nice deep edging, she'll likely pass Mirai in PCS but not in TES after the hands down

This step sequence looks quite labored to me, they seem to be perhaps under conditioned?

Nice twizzle sequences
I'm going to have nightmares about these costumes
Good speed and attack going into this Rhumba sequence
They're improved from last season which is great to see
Very good unison on the circular not-touching step sequence, but the speed could increase for my taste
Slight stumble by her right before the end but she held on

3) Charlotte Lichtman & Dean Copely (USA)

I love these guys, they're so sassy
This is a perfect example of Zoueva/Shpilband catering to each team's needs and making them stand out in what they do
Nice smooth entrance into the 1st Rhumba sequence, good smooth edgework
Good twizzle work, I appreciate how close together they are
Charlotte is a little stiff in her upper body today, I'd like to see her relax a little more out there
Slight stumble by Dean in the circular not-touching step sequence, that will effect the level
These guys look just a little bit nervous, understandable for their first Senior Grand Prix but it's been a solid debut thus far
They look solid, nothing junior-ish about this program

4) Penny Coomes & Nicholas Buckland (GBR)
Music: El Bess del Findl, Let's Get Loud

They could stand to point their feet harder and really stretch through the free leg in the Rhumba sequences
And here's our second "Let's Get Loud" of the day; how many more should I expect? I like the small detail work in the circular step sequence from the hand and head gestures to the shimmies
Very odd ending pose, I couldn't tell if she fell or if that was the choreography

5) Xintong Huang & Xun Zheng (CHN)
Music: Mambo, Rhumba, Samba

These costumes are killing me, my eyes!
She bails a little early on the first twizzle set
Her free arm is really stiff on this 1st Rhumba set, but their speed is nice
I missed what happened, but it looked like a botched lift or something going into the circular step sequence
Nice hydroblade move, I appreciate that people are still doing those, though this one wasn't the best I've seen by any means
I think they're running out of steam here at the end
Dramatic final position upside down
That lift will receive zero points

6) Pernelle Carron & Lloyd Jones (FRA)
Music: Mambo, Rhumba, Mambo

Slight unison issue in twizzles, but decent speed
She has a very nice free arm in the 1st Rhumba sequence, expressive and free-flowing
Something about this program isn't really doing much for me, it's just not dynamic enough, a little flat thus far
It begins to pick up a little more with the 2nd piece of music
They're losing a little control in the step sequence, it's getting a bit wild
I like they're energy, but they need more polish

7) Ekaterina Bobrova & Dmitri Soloviev (RUS)

They have never looked like stars to me, I wonder how long they can honestly hold onto the top spot in Russia?

I love me some theatrics, but she is way over the top in her facial expressions, even for me!
Their speed is good, but she is flailing out of control
This program is very 1990s Russian ice dance

8) Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani (USA)
Music: Batuca, Skip to the Bip, Jazz Machine

I like Maia's new dress, much more mature than the old blue dress
They look like a senior team
Very quick footwork, precision is key
That move where Alex flips her around with one arm has improved so much since Finlandia
Perfectly matched leg line in Rhumba sequence 1
Nobody twizzles like them, and they do the optional 3rd set
They pay attention to everything, down to finger and head placements
Very smooth and even speed throughout
Maia looks much more mature this season, she is just carrying herself differently this season than at the start of 2010
This is such a clean program, what a debut for the beginning of the season

2011 Cup of China: Ice Dance Preview

The short dance will be the kick off event this weekend at Cup of China, at 3:30 a.m. EST on Friday November 4th. The free dance is at 2:30 a.m. EST on Saturday November 5th. Two of these teams were top 6 at 2011 Worlds, but the rest are more Intermediate-level teams, new teams, or teams rising from the Junior ranks.

Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani (USA) are the favorites to win this event, their first major competition after winning Bronze at Worlds. I've seen their new programs and love them, though many argue their new free skate is too similar to that of last season. They certainly have an identity now and their coaches, Zoueva & Shpilband know how to show off what they do well. This is their first major event as the favorites so we'll see how they handle the pressure...my guess is they pass with flying colors. Their win is not as cut and dry though as that of those of their training mates Davis/White & Virtue/Moir, as Ekaterina Bobrova & Dmitri Soloviev (RUS) are in the mix as well. They had a solid 2010 GP winning a Gold, a Silver, and placing 4th at the Final. However, they struggled with programs that didn't suit them and only placed 6th at Worlds. They do not have the technical proficiency of the Shibutanis, but they could potential beat them in the components mark if they can find their identity as a couple and put out programs that show of their stronger suits. Reigning Junior World Bronze medalists Charlotte Lichtman & Dean Copely (USA) have the change to play spoiler for a medal. They were competitive all last season and have always had a very "senior look" so the transition shouldn't be too difficult. If they avoid major mistakes I can see them on the podium. Pernelle Carron & Lloyd Jones (FRA) have finished 12th at the past two World Championships and it seems they need to make a major change if they want to jump up in the rankings, but they're a nice enough team and pleasant to watch. China isn't known for ice dancing, but Xintong Huang & Xun Zheng (CHN) had a respectable 2010-2011 season and may start to make a name for themselves. Emily Samuelson & Todd Gilles (USA) are a new team and this will be the first we see of them. Look for long lines and an elegant, lyrical style, even if all the technical elements aren't there quite yet.

2011 Cup of China: Pairs Preview

Pairs has gone from my least favorite discipline to my favorite in the past year and I think that is because of all the different styles that are emerging. Cup of China will showcase a variety of styles from lyrical and elegant to athletic and aggressive. They skate their short program on Friday November 4th at 8:45 a.m. EST and their free skate on Saturday November 5th at 8:30 a.m.

Yuko Kavaguti & Alexander Smirnov (RUS) have struggled with consistency in big events in recent seasons, but if they skate cleanly they'll be favored to win here. They've grown on me a lot in recent seasons and I've come to love their soft lyrical style. Their Clair de Lune free skate was gorgeous last season and I'll be happy to see it again, especially paired with a new short program. If they fail to execute at a high level, the young dynamos Wenjing Sui & Cong Han (CHN) will be ready to seize the top spot of the podium with their Quadruple twist and other top-notch elements. Their elements are do die for, but they are still a step below the top teams in their presentation and interpretation, though they are working toward a higher level of maturity and polish. Kirsten-Moore Towers & Dylan Moscovitch (CAN) are a fun team to watch because for their speed, energy, and athleticism, though they lack the finesse and precision of the Russians and the Chinese. Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig (USA) should be essentially neck and neck with the Canadians in this event as they normally put up similar scores, though they have all the elegance and polish, but often lack the consistency in jumps and throws. I would say a clean Evora & Ladwig will beat a clean Moore-Towers & Moscovitch, but both are unpredictable. Dan Zhang & Hao Zhang (CHN) returned to the scene this year with a debut at Skate America, picking up a Bronze. Both programs were clean, but unimpressive in my opinion. Their programs don't seem to have a lot of growing room so I can't see them scoring much higher than they did at Skate America. They'll likely skate cleanly so a medal is in reach if the inconsistent Canadians or Americans make mistakes. Xiaoyu Yu & Yang Jin (CHN) are very young team competing in their second senior GP, having skated at Skate Canada last week. Their poorly executed short program kept them out of the medal hunt, but they finished 4th in the free skate.
