2016 US Figure Skating Championships: Pairs Recap

The Senior Pairs event was supposed to be a slam dunk for Alexa Scimeca and Chris Knierim, based on their International season, but when has a US Pairs event even been that simple? They made mistakes in both programs which opened the door for Tarah Kayne and Danny O'Shea, who were not only clean, but gave transcendent performances that could make a splash at Worlds if performed in that manner.

Let's revisit the questions I posed before the event and recap how these things shook down.
  1. Will Scimeca & Knierim allow their Skate America and NHK medals and GPF qualification to propel them to a 2nd consecutive US Title?
    1. Not so much...I think they were way too confident coming in and they did not perform up to the best of their abilities. They will get a chance to redeem themselves at Worlds.
  2. Looking forward, can Delilah Sappenfield coach a World Medalist?
    1. This is to be determined, but in my opinion, the best pairs coaches are in Florida.
  3. Will Kayne & O’Shea or Aaron & Settlage, or Castelli & Tran perform in a way that establishes a clear 2nd place US Team?
    1. Kayne & O'Shea and Scimeca & Knierim are clearly the top 2 in the US, but 4 Continents and Worlds should give us a clearer picture of who is the 1 and who is the 2.
  4. Will Calalang & Sidhu be able to factor in?
    1. They led until the top group took the ice and that's about it, though they did top Aaron & Settlage in the free skate.
  5. Can Mervin Tran ever achieve the success he once had with Narumi Takahashi again, and with Marissa Castelli? Will they stay together long enough for any of this to matter?
    1. She looks so much happier skating with him than Simon and they seem to be a good match. If they spend another year together and they could make some noise.
  6. Which junior medalists from last year will sneak onto the podium?
    1. Fields & Utah Stevens unfortunately did not even come close. They finished 11th overall after an extremely messy free.
  7. Who will give us that classic great half of a free skate and then crumble in the second?
    1. Unfortunately this was Castelli and Tran. They started so strong and then we had Mervin's fall, the fall on the throw, and the loss of synchronization on the spins.
  8. And last but not least, how many of these teams will still be together next season?
    1. To be determined....

Rostelecom Cup: Pairs Free Skate LIVE BLOG

1) Tiffany Vise & Don Baldwin (USA)
Music: Legends of the Fall & Time to Say Goodbye
  • I love to see them jump in opposite directions, when it goes well that is
  • Seeing that death spiral from overhead made me dizzy
  • This choreography seems so old fashioned to me
  • Hard slip on the 2nd throw
  • Even aside from that, this is light years better than their first GP outing
  • I do like the positions on that final spin
  • Ended after the music
  • I wish he would shave, he looks scruffy
  • 50.22 (TES) + 48.02 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 97.24
  • 45.91 (SP) + 97.24 (FS) = 143.16
2) Nicole Della Monica & Matteo Guarise (ITA)
Music: The Phantom of the Opera
  • What do these costumes have to do with Phantom?
  • Her upper body is very expressive
  • She is clearly the better skater, he needs  lot of work on jumping and artistry
  • Oh geez, he tripped and fell on a crossover
  • He is clearly just there because he's strong enough to lift and throw her
  • He looks so unsure and shaky out there that I'm concerned for her safety in those lifts
  • They are just skating through this music, no connection to it at all
  • This music may be overdone, but it's very emotionally charged and I don't understand how you can skate to it without feeling something

2012 Four Continents Championships: Pairs Free Skate LIVE Coverage

1) Huibo Dong & Yiming Wu (CHN)
 Music: Mulan
  • Huge split 3twist
  • Some issues on both sets of SBS jumps
  • A lot of position changes, but not the beauty we're used to from the other teams
  • Very sloppy death spiral positions, grip changes to up the level
  • There is not much of a performance here, no attention to character, who are they even playing?
  • Gigantic throw, as per the Chinese tradition
  • This is very much a string of elements with no artistry at all
  • They look happy to have made it through the program, very winded
46.37 (TES) + 42.02 (PCS) = 88.39
49.52 (SP) + 88.39 (FS) = 137.91

2) Yue Zhang & Lei Wang (CHN)
 Music: Singin' In the Rain
  • That's a very cute opening
  • Was that only a split double twist? From the Chinese?
  • A little timing issue on the SBS jumps
  • Good ice coverage on that lift, I like the spinning exit; cleaner positions than the other Chinese team
  • They look like they're having a lot of fun out there
  • Some unison problems on the spins, he is rotating much faster than her
  • Nice smooth throw, not the power of Dong/Wu
  • Turn out of the 2nd throw, a little low on the landing
  • Backward entrance adds difficulty to that lift
  • That spiral with her foot on his shoulder is unique, it's risky for him
  • Major skid getting that final lift up, that could've been really scary
  • Much more attention to performance than Dong/Wu, I appreciate the commitment
46.77 (TES) + 45.43 (PCS) = 92.20
48.04 (SP) + 92.20 (FS) = 140.24

3) Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford (CAN)
 Music: Viva La Vida, Yellow
  • I'm loving Meagan's braid
  • She looks smaller than normal to me for some reason
  • Really good split twist, I love the footwork into it
  • This is a very well composed program
  • Hand down from Meagan on the first jump, but they still execute the 3-jump combo
  • Fall from Meagan on the second jump sequence, some thing has looked really off with her this week
  • Eric has really grown on me, my eye is going to him more than Meagan now
  • I love that swinging entrance into the spins
  • I love it when the spins transition the music into the 2nd piece
  • It's nitpicky, but his shirt is a little too blousy for me
  • He's looking really unsteady on these lifts
  • Good save muscling out that throw, she's a fighter
  • She floats like nobody's business into those lifts
  • Hand down and maybe a 2-foot on the 2nd throw
  • They are giving up a ton of points here and there
  • Not the dream free skate they had a Canadians, but they still have Worlds left to peak
62.27 (TES) + 52.96 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 114.23
57.53 (SP) + (FS) = 171.76

4) Jessica Dube & Sebastien Wolfe (CAN)
 Music: Heroes by Phillip Glass
  • This music kills me but I won't hold it against them
  • I can't imagine rehearsing to this music daily
  • The split twist is still eluding them, but it's getting there
  • She' the veteran, she should be able to land these jumps
  • Slight unison on the spins
  • The free skate is usually where the "newness" in this pair shows
  • She just sat that throw down, perhaps a speed issue
  • They are having trouble relating to this music
  • Another fall on the throw, he looked to mouth "I'm sorry" to her
  • They're really unraveling, I'm praying for safe lifts
  • She seems to have no energy whatsoever, but he still looks strong
  • That carry lift needs more ice coverage and perhaps a more robust section of the music to be effective
49.45 (TES) + 49.66 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 97.11
57.68 (SP) + 97.11 (FS) = 154.79

5) Paige Lawrence & Rudi Swiegers (CAN)
Music: The Man in the Iron Mask
  • This team has been focusing on PCS over TES, we'll see if it shows
  • Sloppy shoulder catch on the split 3 twist
  • Slight unison break on the SBS jumps
  • More unison issues on the 2a sequence
  • Paige is usually such a firecracker but this program doesn't have any life to me
  • More unison problems on the spins
  • I like that they're having fun, but they're a little too smiley for this dramatic music
  • That hydroblade entrance into the death spiral was cool
  • They still look pretty high energy about halfway through
  • Rough entrance into that lift, a struggle to get up, you could see Paige talking him through
  • Not a lot of distance or height on these throws, but at least they're landing them
  • Very labored on the lifts, I think the backloading of the program is backfiring at this altitude
49.99 (TES) + 50.70 (PCS) = 100.69
57.97 (SP) + 100.69 (FS) = 158.66

6) Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig
 Music: Daphnis et Chloe
  • A little messy on the split twist, but that's never their strong suit anyway
  • Both step out of the SBS jump, but in perfect unison
  • This is the best choreography of the whole event in my opinion
  • Fall on the 1st throw
  • She looks tentative, never a good sign
  • She may have singled the axel, I couldn't tell
  • Fantastic twist into that stand on his thigh
  • Very smooth in and out of the death spiral
  • Beautiful 2nd throw
  • Very nice elements thus far aside from the throw, no falls on the jumps here from Amanda at all, step in the right direction
  • Their lifts are more grand than anyone else, bar none
  • I wish his shirt were the same color as the midsection on her dress
  • Great toss into that final lift
  • Lovely spin positions, but a little slow in that pair spin
  • Clunky exit out of that final lift, an unfortunate way to end the program
54.30 (TES) + 53.94 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 107.24
60.75 (SP) + 107.24 (FS) = 167.99

7) Wenjing Sui & Cong Han (CHN)
 Music: The Soul of Flamenco
  • She's bringing out her inner diva on that elaborate entrance
  • This program grows on me every competition
  • Quad throw! Two-footed, but hey!
  • 4twist, rough catch, but at least they're getting it done
  • A little out of unison, but strong 3-jump sequence
  • They seem more calm here, not as frantic as earlier in the season
  • She could stretch out the free leg and foot more on the death spiral
  • A little unison break in the spin position change
  • Her flexibility on that spiral is phenomenal
  • This program is light years better than it was in September
  • Fantastic 2nd throw, that got so much difference
  • That upside down entrance into the press lift is really cool
  • Ohh scary moment mid-lift, she puts her arms on his shoulders to save her balance
  • A lot of speed on that last lift, good rotation
  • Great program from them, they look more grown up every time
  • They look exhausted, breath kids breath!
75.54 (TES) + 59.54 (PCS) = 135.08
66.75 (SP) + 135.08 (FS) = 201.83

8) Narumi Takahashi & Mervin Tran (JPN)
 Music: Concerto de Quebec
  • This team couldn't be more different from what we just saw
  • Only a split 2twist
  • Hard spill for Narumi, nearly fell on her face
  • Wow what a mess on that SBS sequence, she singled, he stumbled and cut the 2nd jump
  • If they had Sui/Han's technical tricks, they'd be unstoppable with their elegance
  • She's one of those skaters who can't hit a bad position, other pair ladies must watch he rlifts
  • A two-foot and a step out on the 1st throw, same on the 2nd
  • He nearly skated over her on the 2nd throw, that was terrifying
  • It must be so hard to keep going after all those mistakes
  • And they nearly skated into the board out of their 2nd lift, just not their night at all
  • Lovely extension and toe point in that 3rd lift, exit could've been more smooth
55.32 (TES) + 55.25 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 109.57
61.54 (SP) + 109.57 (FS) = 171.11

9) Caydee Denny & John Coughlin (USA)
 Music: Nessun Dorma
  • Their elaborate entrances to center ice are too high drama even for me
  • This program is growing on me, I hated the guitar early in the season but it suits them
  • Gorgeous split 3twist
  • Nice throw, a little scratchy, but good glide out
  • Near perfect unison on the SBS jumps
  • It was a fight, but landed the 2nd SBS sequence
  • They have great spin unison for a new pair, that's usually the hardest thing to ma
  • The lift positions are just not attractive, a stern Russian ballet teacher could work that out in no time
  • Awesome 2nd throw, huge roar from the crowd
  • That catch-foot position is slightly more attractive because the bum isn't sticking up
  • Here is that carry lift that John dreams about everyday
  • Her foot gets scarily close to his head up there
  • A big scary on that headbanger at the end, he bent his knees and barely muscled her back up
62.82 (TES) + 59.25 (PCS) = 122.07
63.35 (SP) + 122.07 (FS) = 185.42

10) Mary Beth Marley & Rockne Brubaker (USA)
Music: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor by Rachmaninov
  • Come on guys, earn  yourself a medal!
  • This program suits them so well, and it's appropriate for their age situation
  • Mary Beth falls on the same jump she missed in warmup
  • A little crashy on the split twist, looked labored
  • She steps out of the double axel, she looks a little antsy today
  • I love their SBS split jumps, I must've missed that at Nationals
  • Good spinning unison, that's a big area of improvement over last season
  • Good throw, good job Mary Beth
  • Her lift positions are improving at every event
  • That pair spiral is beautiful, she looks so happy to be out there
  • Very nice carry lift on one leg, good ice coverage
  • It would be great to see some more variation in the lift positions, but that will come
  • Two-foots the 2nd throw, again a good save
  • They gave away a lot of points here and there, it's going to be close if they land on the podium
60.91 (TES) + 56.56 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 116.47
62.42 (SP) + 116.47 (FS) = 178.89

2012 US Figure Skating Championships: Senior Pairs Free Skate LIVE Coverage

1) Rita Fehr & Peter Biver
  Music:
   (TES) + (PCS) = 53.68
   31.37 (SP) + (FS) = 85.05

2) Kloe Chanel Bautista & Tyler Harris
  Music:
  • A lot of speed traveling across the ice
  • Nice lift positions, she reminds me of Melissa Bulanhagui
  • Great side by side jump sequence
  • We had some wipeouts on both throws unfortunately
  • Some serious unison issues on those spins
  • Strong finish, but a lot of issues on some important elements
  42.96 (TES) + 39.60 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 80.56
   42.16 (SP) + 80.56 (FS) = 122.72

3) Cassie Andrews & Timothy LeDuc
  Music: Carmen
  • Oy vey Carmen, here we go
  • So much speed right now, awesome energy out of the gate
  • She falls on the triple sal
  • No height at all on the throw, she flipped forward, didn't stop the landing
  • I get nervous for the lifts when the teams start by making mistakes
  • Some pretty major unison issues on the spins, though I know that's one of the most difficult things in pairs skating
  • Oh he just slipped on that rotational lift, that was scary
  • They are losing control of this performance
  • I think they need to slow it down and solidify their basics
  41.65 (TES) + 42.52 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 83.17
   45.35 (SP) + 83.17 (FS) = 128.52

4) Tiffany Vise & Don Baldwin
Music: Legends of the Fall, Time to Say Goodbye
  • Gorgeous music for a very mature couple
  • Very hard crash on that split twist, should've stuck with a double
  • Stumble out of the throw
  • She doubles the the side by side jump
  • Everything is muscled here, nothing looks easy, which it should as well trained as they are
  • This whole program looks unstable to me
  • Now there was a gorgeous throw
  • Lovely side by side spins
  • Not a good performance from them overall, unfortunate really because I've seen this done well before
   51.24 (TES) + 45.08 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 95.32
   45.65 (SP) + 95.32 (FS) = 140.97

5) Felicia Zhang & Nathan Bartholomay
  Music: Concierto de Aranjuez
  • I love these costumes right now
  • Fantastic speed
  • Nice split twist, a little hiccup on landing, but good otherwise
  • Slight unison hiccup, but great side by side 3ts
  • They seem well matched, good pacing
  • 2a sequence, very sharp
  • Coach is going crazy off to the side
  • She has grown a lit and her long limbs make some nice positions in the lifts
  • Good spin unison there, lacking in some speed, but that will come with experience
  • They are doing more of an understated interpretation of this music, but I like it nonetheless
  • Really smooth, clean throw 3s
  • Hand down on that 2nd throw, but that's the only flaw of this piece thus far
  • I really like them together, they are well-matched in their performance qualities
  • Nice job on that carry lift on the crescendo
  • I'd like a lower death spiral position
  • She is really giving it to the audience on this program, great way to say "we don't belong in this group"
   59.07 (TES) + 47.93 (PCS) = 107.00
   49.57 (SP) + 107.00 (FS) = 156.57

6) Alexa Scimeca & Ivan Dmitrov
  Music: Unstoppable
  • A lot of flashy footwork into that split twist, crash landing
  • Oh no, she puts hand down, he falls
  • Big throw 3f, two-footed, very stifled landing
  • They seem to have a little bit too much speed to contain
  • A lot of snow flying on that lasso lift, seemed short a few rotations
  • They just seem a bit awkward on their timing today, that stop during the music change was a little weird
  • Oh she just totally bailed on that jump, she looked very uneasy on that jump
  • Impressive to go up into that carry lift after such a rough jumping pass
  • They're going to want this one back
  • Oh goodness, she practically landed on her knees in that 2nd throw
  • Those lifts look wild, they are really scaring me, I'm glad nobody got hurt in that program
  41.65 (TES) + 41.04 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 80.69
   51.93 (SP) + 80.69 (FS) = 132.62

7) Ashley Cain & Joshua Reagan
  Music: Dr. Zhivago
  • This is a beauty of a piece of music for a lovely pair
  • Lovely air position in that lift, very strong carry
  • They are so well matched, they look like siblings
  • Very nice jumping passes
  • What happened to them doing their jumps at the end of the program?
  • A little slow in the spins, but fantastic unison
  • I appreciate how well they complement one another
  • Very slow across the ice on that spiral, let's pick up some speed here to fire up the second half
  • Beautiful throw triple salchow
  • They are fantastic if they will just STAY TOGETHER!
  • They have fantastic basics that they can build upon
   59.50 (TES) + 54.11 (PCS) = 113.61
   53.04 (SP) + 113.61 (FS) = 166.65

8) Gretchen Donlan & Andrew Speroff
  Music: Sleeping Beauty
  • They are such romantic skaters, very elegant and balletic, so this piece fits them perfectly
  • Those lifts do not even look hard for them at all, she's such a tiny little pixie
  • She's practically the same height as him when he's on his knee
  • Slight unison issues on the jumping passes, she singles the axel
  • Beautiful subtle arm movements in the lifts
  • Fantastic arch in the back on the death spiral
  • Gorgeous throws, gorgeous elements, fantastic potential, add some difficulty and they're there!
  • What a nice button on the end, like a beautiful pas de deux
  56.98 (TES) + 56.86 (PCS) = 113.84
   57.77 (SP) + (FS) = 171.61

9) Andrea Poapst & Chris Knierim
  Music: Swan Lake
  • Here's another beautiful ballet couple, 3 in a row
  • The height on that throw is gigantic, Sappenfield knows how to teach those
  • Hand down on the throw 3s, still a lovely position
  • Great smooth position shifts in that lift, a little stiff on her part
  • I like that spin sequence and where it falls on the music
  • Another hand down on the other throw, but amazing job saving from a fall
  • I love the placement of that lift on the big music shift
  • I normally hate alternate death spiral positions, but hers was actually nice
  57.76 (TES) + 55.19 (PCS) = 112.96
   53.43 (SP) + 112.96 (FS) = 166.38

10) Marissa Castelli & Simon Shnapnir
  Music:
  • A little messy on the landing on the split twist
  • Wiped out on the landing for Simon on that jump, couldn't control it
  • She has so much trust in those lifts, she says she can see into the 2nd tier of the arena
  • Nearly landed that throw 3a, just a turn out of it
  • I want her to stretch out that open position, really cool positions up there
  • He struggles on his jumps and today is no exception
  • Slightly off center in that pair spin today
  • Huge height on that throw 3sal, nice landing on the crescendo
  • Interesting death spiral position, I'm not sure if I liked it or not
  • Wonderful stretch in that carry lift
  54.83 (TES) + 55.42 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 108.26
   60.56 (SP) + (FS) = 168.81

11) Caydee Denney & John Coughlin
  Music: Nessun Dorma
  • That eyeshadow is just bad
  • That split twist lacked the usual punch, it was like in slow motion
  • That throw 3lo was a little stifled, abrupt, no glide out
  • SBS 3ts, just a tad out of sync
  • Good spins, I could hear John calling them to switch positions
  • I'm a little bit bored by this for a team that's supposed to be really "explosive"
  • The lifts have impressive positions, but none of them really achieve the full extension
  • Nice posture on that throw 3f, good strong back
  • That final carry lift is pretty spectacular, such great ice coverage, such excitement
  65.33 (TES) + 63.49 (PCS) = 128.82
   60.88 (SP) + 128.82 (FS) = 189.70

12) Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig
  Music: Daphnis et Chloe
  • The costumes are gorgeous, I love this program
  • Nice clean landing on the split twist
  • Two-foot on the jump landing, probably the best she is going to do
  • Turn out of the triple lutz, they're giving it away here
  • She just went down on the 2a, this is not going to happen
  • The lifts are obviously fantastic
  • Gorgeous throw
  • She needs to maybe go to a sports psychologist, just to find the grit and strength within to compete hard
  • This is just really anti-climactic for me, as much as I loved these programs on the Grand Prix
   59.10 (TES) + 59.61 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 117.71
   61.27 (SP) + 117.71 (FS) = 178.98

13) Mary Beth Marley & Rockne Brubaker
  Music:
  • I love his costume, the little pink underneath is great
  • Very quick off the top
  • Rockne, come on, get those jumps going
  • Very crashy on that split 3twist, but good height
  • Turn out of the 2a, but landed nonetheless
  • A little unison issue on the spins, but good positions
  • They are losing me here a little in the middle
  • Fantastic throw 3lz, she looked fantastic on that
  • She looks lovely in those lifts, her posture is lovely
  • They both have pretty nice spiral positions
  • She looks great out there, very comfortable, so much more than last year
  • I'm just so impressed by Mary Beth Marley right now
  • She eeked out that last throw
  60.27 (TES) + 61.00 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 120.27
   65.80 (SP) + 120.27 (FS) = 186.07
