2017 Nationals Recap

Any discussion of the 2017 Nationals should begin and with Nathan Chen, so to the left he is in all his glory. These were my favorite moments of the championships in no particular order.

1. Parsons/Parsons win Jr. Dance-I watched them win novice dance the first season I really paid attention to the lower levels. I also interviewed them for KidsPost many moons ago so that was a fun memory. They were overshadowed by their training partners in recent years, but I hope they win the Jr. World title and I will be so excited to see those two teams go head to head at the senior level for years to come.

2. Cain/LeDuc win the Pairs Short-I loved how they approached their debut. I remember tweeting that I was attacking my wine like Ashley attacked that triple loop. I loved the attitude and the aggression. They have a look of a team that is ready to make waves. Please stay together!

3. Mirai Nagasu's Short-That look of joy on her face when she nailed the short was priceless. She rotated the triple-triple and 2nd seemed like such a great place for her after her history of meltdowns. If only the short were its own competition...

4. The Shibutanis Short Dance-I was puzzled when the ISU announced Hip-Hop as one of the rhythms this year, but its been such a party all season. I love how dance teams are pushing the boundaries by hiring off-ice choreographers and Hok got these guys to move in a way I've never seen.

5. Nathan Chen-He is consistent and throws it down under pressure in a way we haven't seen with US men since Evan Lysacek. The jumping ability is insane, but he's not one of those jumps-only skaters. He certainly isn't Jason Brown, but he hears the music and shows emotion through his choreography. Let's keep him in a bubble until worlds and then again until the Olympics.

6. Madison Chock's Facial Expressions-I'm almost positive this is in my recap every year. That girl was born for the theatre. She has an expressive face like Patti Lupone...she projects to the mezzanine. I love how she is styled with all the bells and whistles whether it's a crop top, a winged eye, or a double pony. Brava for performance quality!

7. Ashley Wagner's Tweets-She has such a unique voice on twitter and she doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks. I love when she tweets about the fashions of the mens event and tells us who competed against her brother. I also invited myself to her happy hour and she tweeted me back, so I guess that means she obliged despite my being in a different time zone. Today's athletes have such a unique opportunity to interact with fans on twitter and she always brings the A game.

8. The always blunt Frank Carroll-We all expected Gracie and Frank to split, but how it happened threw us for a loop. Frank very respectfully told the media that he and Gracie would no longer be working together. When spending so much time and energy together, it is important to see the results and they simply weren't there. The only problem is that Gracie didn't know she'd been cut loose. Still, the two have been so civil in the media. The white gloves haven't been taken off yet, but we know some juicy gossip is sure to come out soon. I started a rumor that Gracie is going to train with Kori Ade and I hope it happens. She is a nurturing coach and Rohene could bring out Gracie's wild side.

9. The Skating Lesson's interview with Christine & Phil-My first skating memories are circa 1994 so all the Tonya stories brought warmth to my heart, not in a sadistic way but in a nostalgic way. In all seriousness, it was so cool to see them in the same place sharing their knowledge and analysis. I often think of how far skating has fallen since the Kwan years, but when they put it in perspective, we are lucky with the coverage and crowds we get compared to most Olympic sports. And if you can't chuckle about Tonya's "broken" skate laces, of which Phil possesses a piece, then you're taking yourself too seriously.

10. Bitching about NBC and Tara Lipinski-This shout out goes to my twitter family. We love to hate NBC's coverage, even though we are actually grateful to get any primetime coverage these days. However, we do have a right to hate the fluff and repetitive short programs that they show instead of live free skates. This brings me to our favoring Nagano OGM winner. When former athletes become commentators, we want their perspective and we want to hear about their experiences. There is a fine line between sharing your stories and making the event about yourself. Tara crosses it every time. It's one think to scrutinize a skater's jump technique or scoff at their hair, costume, and overall packaging, but telling a skater that "the sport has passed him by" is another thing entirely. This comment about Alexander Johnson was both false and rude. Twitter promptly went after Tara, with yours truly wielding the pitchfork. Clearly Tara doesn't see that despite lacking a quad, Alexander Johnson has more artistry in his hair than she had in her entire career from Little Women to Anastasia.

2016 US Figure Skating Championships: Mens Recap

I was less excited about the Senior men than any other event in this competition. Did you feel me? However, after so many relatively clean shorts, I was actually looking forward to this free! Though the judging left us asking questions, the competitors were at their best!
  1. Without Jason Brown or even Joshua Farris in the competition, any win almost seems…..less than. Nevertheless:
    1. Boy was I wrong! Adam won this event, but he had heavy competition, from his training mate Nathan Chen in particular.
  2. Can Max Aaron, the clear favorite, land his jumps and win outright?
    1. He landed the jumps and had some semblance of performance quality, but with so much two-foot skating his program didn't hold a candle to Adam. Adam leads in artistry and Chen leads in athleticism, which leaves Max Aaron just hanging out in the middle.
  3. Will Nathan Chen, the once novice and junior phenom, improve upon last year’s 8th place finish in his Senior debut and threaten for the podium?
    1. Did he ever! In my opinion, he should have won. I am a dance teacher and theatre nerd, so I of all people appreciate performance quality, but this is in fact a sport and athleticism should prevail.
  4. Can dark horse candidate and twitter-verse favorite Grant Hochstein make a statement after his impressive 4th place finishes at Cup of China and NHK Trophy?
    1. Johnny and Tara would not agree, but Grant pulled at the heart strings in his free and earned the fabulous pewter. With Chen's health uncertain, he has a strong shot at the world team.
  5. If Hochstein skates cleanly, will he have a moment with his Les Miz free skate and bring the crowd to its feet?
    1. He did indeed! Dell Pelligrini also had a moment when he skated over to her after the skate. Again, Johnny and Tara threw shade, but the real skating fans know better and appreciate a true "Nationals moment" when we see one.
  6. Is Ross Miner still relevant?
    1. He was indeed relevant in the short program, but without the quad or the unmatched artistry of Rippon, he will have difficulty making a world team.
  7. Will Adam Rippon’s jumps fail him yet again, but wow us with his artistry?
    1. Yes and yes!
  8. Who will be the surprise member of the final group in the free?
    1. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Tim Dolensky! I hated how Tara called him a "practice skater" just because he doesn't train at a big fancy rink. This kid has talent and I don't think this showing was a fluke.
  9. Who will make the biggest jump from the short to the free?
    1. He only jumped from 7th to 6th, but Alexander Johnson gave the free performance of the event for me after forgettable short. He is a true artist. His edge work is stellar and he makes this incredibly difficult sport look effortless.
  10. And finally, the question is not if, but who, will the selection committee screw out of an International assignment?
    1. The answer as of now is "nobody".  However, if Chen cannot attend Worlds, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if USFS reconsiders Brown's petition over 1st alternate Hochstein.

Barbie's Friday Thoughts

Dance:

  1. We should have Charlie & Tanith together doing commentary
  2. Daniel Eaton has beautiful posture
  3. Aldridge and Blackmer have potential once he masters the techniques...they clearly love skating together
  4. I am thoroughly impressed by Hawayek & Baker; they truly look like seniors this year and their program was beautifully composed
  5. The Shibutanis were 100% precise which I would say is a hallmark of Zoueva's teams, not one limb, one finger, one hair out of place
  6. I'm living for all of this ballet today! Happy birthday Balanchine!
  7. Madison Chock is a star as long as you don't look at her feet
  8. The top 2 teams should be reversed and everybody else on twitter agrees...Chock/Bates are more dramatic but the Shibutanis are more precise
  9. I completely agree with Charlie White...Hubbell & Donohue's short has the feeling of a free dance with the emotional storytelling
  10. One team actually DANCED today and that was Hubbell & Donohue....you don't see the elements, just the movement

Men:

  1. Nathan Chen knows how to compete-he did not skate perfectly, but he did not fall apart either
  2. Jimmy Ma can rock a sheer top
  3. Few skaters are more lyrical than Grant Hochstein-it's a shame that he couldn't go clean
  4. Vincent Zhou has some guts-at least with the jumps-the spins and footwork will come and he will compete with Chen before too long
  5. Ross Miner made me weep...his program was just so easy to watch and for the first time tonight I didn't feel anxious
  6. Sean Rabbit's Samson & Delilah was artistic, energetic, and so fast!
  7. Tim Dolensky has an artist's soul and he showed that tonight
  8. Max Aaron make jumping look so easy when he's on with those springy knees and he's developing some performance skills
  9. Adam's footwork was the one element that stood out above everything else for me tonight
  10. This event was infinitely better than the ladies short...these guys showed up to COMPETE

2012 US Figure Skating Championships: Junior Men's Free Skate

1) Troy Tomasello
   Music: Jaws
  •  Wonky combination to start, but landed
  • This is actually really cool skating music, has anyone else done it before?
  • Really nice triple lutz, but lots of ice flying on the landing
  • He is a little stone-faced, I'd love to see some more expression on his face
  • He looks to be running out of steam her
  • A lot of tano variations in this competition
  • Oh no, he seemed to have given up out there toward the end
  • That was a decent performance, no need to give up!
 49.96 (TES) + 44.50 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 93.46
 53.90 (SP) + 93.46 (FS) =  147.36

2) Andrew Nagode
   Music: The Bolt
  • Uh oh, some unfortunate falls, looks like a lack of concentration
  • His jumps just aren't there for him tonight
  • I love his Russian look!
  • Nice 3-jump combination
  • Unfortunate pop
  • He really ended strong, but he won't be thrilled with that performance
  • I love his approach to judging his piece in the K&C, he's being critical but constructive
 43.78 (TES) + 45.30 (PCS) -2.00(DED) = 87.08
 47.91 (SP) + 87.08 (FS) = 134.99

3) David Wang
   Music: Concierto de Aranjuez
  •  Oy vey this music
  • Nice save on that jump, nearly crashed, but did an illusion spin out of it
  • I like his fire and intensity
  • He is a very dancey skater, he gets the flavor of the piece
  • Oooo hard fall right onto the stomach
  • It's taking him a while to get back into the piece, lost a lot of speed
  • Popped jump nearly into the boards
  • I really like his spin positions,  needs to straighten out that standing leg
  • Oh no, another pop
  • He is a really good skater, great basic skills and a passion for performing, but the jumps just aren't with him today
  • He has great potential, I really want to see him do well next time
39.16 (TES) + 41.94 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 80.10
 52.62 (SP) + 80.10 (FS) = 132.72

4) Ryan Hartley
   Music: Sherlock Holmes
  •  He's taking off like a bat out of hell
  • Really attacking those jumps, very wobbly landings, but landings nonetheless
  • All these landings are really stifled and pitched forward, I'm no expert but I'd say that comes from tension and/or nerves
  • He is a really aggressive skater, but there's little artistry involved
  • I love a good hydroblade move
  • He is so stiff, now that he's landed all the jumps, he can loosen up and perform a little more!
  • That will certainly go into first
 52.84 (TES) + 44.34 (PCS) = 97.18
 44.67 (SP) + 97.18 (FS) = 141.85

5) Emmanuel Savary
   Music: Lion King
  •  That is a wild costume there boy!
  • Yes, nice clean jump to start
  • I love his lines and his expressive upper body
  • Hand down, but fought to save it
  • I love this music, great choice
  • Great 3 lutz, big old smile!
  • He is very elegant and graceful, that's what I love about him
  • He has the elegance and polish to be a senior skater if he can build some consistency
  • Fantastic skating we're seeing here from him
  • Oh now, fall and into the boards
  • Still a great skate from him, he is moving in the right direction
 48.16 (TES) + 45.92 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 93.08
 36.37 (SP) + 93.08 (FS) = 129.45

6) Harrison Choate
   Music: La Strada
  • Great speed, uses those long legs to get great push
  • Nice double axel-combination
  • Good 3lutz-combo with a tano variation
  • Another good 3lutz
  • I feel like he is rushing through the choreography, more time should be taken in the little moments
  • This is such a theatrical piece of music, I'd like to see more nuance and attention to detail
  • Very courageous skate for him to comeback after the rough short
  • That was a quality free skate
 63.67 (TES) + 54.58 (PCS) = 118.25
 45.18 (SP) + 118.25 (FS) = 163.43

7) Jay Yostanto
   Music:
  •  I really like this music, very regal
  • He is a really quality skater, huge scoring potential when he is on
  • We're seeing some monster jumps from him here tonight, right on!
  • 2 triple axels!
  • Oh no, he just caught the edge of the blade on that one, the jump looked solid in the air
  • Keep it going, you're getting your momentum back
  • He is a very strong, masculine skater
  • Very athletic quality to his skating
  • He looks wiped out, I hope he doesn't get too down on himself because there was some quality skating that just happened
 51.40 (TES) + 44.42 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 93.82
 54.72 (SP) + 93.82 (FS) = 148.54

8) Phillip Warren
   Music:
  •  I love his style, this is going to be a great piece
  • Great showman he is, really playing to the crowd
  • Nice 3-jump combo
  • I really could watch him all day
  • This is such a fun program
  • I love his attention to detail and nuance in the choreography
  • He's thrilled with that as he should be
  64.31 (TES) + 60.44 (PCS) = 124.75
 57.42 (SP) + 124.75 (FS) = 182.17

9) Timothy Dolensky
   Music:
  •  Solid 2A in combo
  • Clean triple lutz
  • The costume isn't doing much for me
  • So far so good, he is nice and clean, in a zone
  • Needs to point the foot on the sit spin, nice show of flexibility in the catch foot spin
  • He is very serious now, but I get where he's coming from
  • I'd like to see him let loose and have a little more fun, but I suspect that will happen once the jumps are over
  • Slightly awkward head position on that back catch-foot spin
  • He's fighting for every point possible, gave away a few GOE marks perhaps on some weak landings, but he's fighting!
  • He laid it down, did all he could do!
 65.88 (TES) + 58.76 (PCS) = 124.64
 63.20 (SP) + (FS) = 187.84

10) Nathan Chen
   Music: Music from the Godfather
  •  I'll be watching for a triple axel
  • This is a very serious piece and he is perfectly in character
  • Not a moment is wasted with his skating
  • Great 3l-3toe combo
  • He is in the zone, such clean jumping technique
  • Another fantastic combo
  • He has great extension and flexibility
  • Nice easy double axel
  • I like the traveling entrance into the camel spin, nice upside down variation into the donut
  • I love all those wally jumps
  • This kid is amazing, little prodigy!
  • He is knocking off these triples like nobody's business
  • Great dance ability and showmanship in the footwork
  • The audience is eating him up right now
 69.39 (TES) + 61.36 (PCS) = 130.75
 63.15 (SP) + (FS) = 193.90

11) Timothy Koleto
   Music:
  •  What a tall order to have to skate after Chen
  • Uh oh, he seems unfocused out there, like he's skating against himself
  • Oh no, another fall, dust yourself off and keep it together, you've still got this!
  • Unfortunately this is just not his night with the jumping errors, but what a lovely, graceful skater he is!
  • Keep your head up Timothy, you're a wonderful skater
 44.57 (TES) + 47.26 (PCS) -2.00 (DED) = 89.83
 59.18 (SP) + (FS) = 149.01

12) Lukas Kaugars
   Music: Piano Concerto No. 2
  •  Huge jumps that one!
  • I'd like to see his expression match the power of this music
  • He's a very athletic skater
  • Oh no, just had a slip off the edge there, that was totally meant to be a clean jump
  • Running out of steam there on the spins a little
  • Tough outing for such a great skater
 44.57 (TES) + 51.50 (PCS) = 96.99
 57.96 (SP) + 96.99 (FS) = 154.95
