2016 US Figure Skating Championships: Mens Recap

I was less excited about the Senior men than any other event in this competition. Did you feel me? However, after so many relatively clean shorts, I was actually looking forward to this free! Though the judging left us asking questions, the competitors were at their best! 

1. Without Jason Brown or even Joshua Farris in the competition, any win almost seems…..less than. Nevertheless:
1. Boy was I wrong! Adam won this event, but he had heavy competition, from his training mate Nathan Chen in particular.
2. Can Max Aaron, the clear favorite, land his jumps and win outright?
1. He landed the jumps and had some semblance of performance quality, but with so much two-foot skating his program didn't hold a candle to Adam. Adam leads in artistry and Chen leads in athleticism, which leaves Max Aaron just hanging out in the middle. 
3. Will Nathan Chen, the once novice and junior phenom, improve upon last year’s 8th place finish in his Senior debut and threaten for the podium?
1. Did he ever! In my opinion, he should have won. I am a dance teacher and theatre nerd, so I of all people appreciate performance quality, but this is in fact a sport and athleticism should prevail.
4. Can dark horse candidate and twitter-verse favorite Grant Hochstein make a statement after his impressive 4th place finishes at Cup of China and NHK Trophy?
1. Johnny and Tara would not agree, but Grant pulled at the heart strings in his free and earned the fabulous pewter. With Chen's health uncertain, he has a strong shot at the world team.
5. If Hochstein skates cleanly, will he have a moment with his Les Miz free skate and bring the crowd to its feet?
1. He did indeed! Dell Pelligrini also had a moment when he skated over to her after the skate. Again, Johnny and Tara threw shade, but the real skating fans know better and appreciate a true "Nationals moment" when we see one.
6. Is Ross Miner still relevant?
1. He was indeed relevant in the short program, but without the quad or the unmatched artistry of Rippon, he will have difficulty making a world team. 
7. Will Adam Rippon’s jumps fail him yet again, but wow us with his artistry?
1. Yes and yes!
8. Who will be the surprise member of the final group in the free?
1. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Tim Dolensky! I hated how Tara called him a "practice skater" just because he doesn't train at a big fancy rink. This kid has talent and I don't think this showing was a fluke. 
9. Who will make the biggest jump from the short to the free?
1. He only jumped from 7th to 6th, but Alexander Johnson gave the free performance of the event for me after forgettable short. He is a true artist. His edge work is stellar and he makes this incredibly difficult sport look effortless.
10. And finally, the question is not if, but who, will the selection committee screw out of an International assignment?
1. The answer as of now is "nobody".  However, if Chen cannot attend Worlds, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if USFS reconsiders Brown's petition over 1st alternate Hochstein. 

Barbie's Friday Thoughts

Dance:

1. We should have Charlie & Tanith together doing commentary
2. Daniel Eaton has beautiful posture
3. Aldridge and Blackmer have potential once he masters the techniques...they clearly love skating together
4. I am thoroughly impressed by Hawayek & Baker; they truly look like seniors this year and their program was beautifully composed
5. The Shibutanis were 100% precise which I would say is a hallmark of Zoueva's teams, not one limb, one finger, one hair out of place
6. I'm living for all of this ballet today! Happy birthday Balanchine! 
7. Madison Chock is a star as long as you don't look at her feet 
8. The top 2 teams should be reversed and everybody else on twitter agrees...Chock/Bates are more dramatic but the Shibutanis are more precise
9. I completely agree with Charlie White...Hubbell & Donohue's short has the feeling of a free dance with the emotional storytelling
10. One team actually DANCED today and that was Hubbell & Donohue....you don't see the elements, just the movement

Men:

1. Nathan Chen knows how to compete-he did not skate perfectly, but he did not fall apart either
2. Jimmy Ma can rock a sheer top
3. Few skaters are more lyrical than Grant Hochstein-it's a shame that he couldn't go clean
4. Vincent Zhou has some guts-at least with the jumps-the spins and footwork will come and he will compete with Chen before too long
5. Ross Miner made me weep...his program was just so easy to watch and for the first time tonight I didn't feel anxious
6. Sean Rabbit's Samson & Delilah was artistic, energetic, and so fast! 
7. Tim Dolensky has an artist's soul and he showed that tonight
8. Max Aaron make jumping look so easy when he's on with those springy knees and he's developing some performance skills
9. Adam's footwork was the one element that stood out above everything else for me tonight
10. This event was infinitely better than the ladies short...these guys showed up to COMPETE

2014 SKATE CANADA: Mens Preview

I always like Skate Canada because for some reason I feel like they consistently get the best talent. I don't see anyone running away with this mens event like Machida did at Skate America. I think we will have a cluster of 5 at the top and 4-5 in the middle.

Podium Predictions:
Gold: Javier Fernandez (ESP)
Silver: Takahito Mura (JPN)
Bronze: Takahiko Kozuka (JPN)

Javier Fernandez (ESP) has been hyped up for the past two years, but hasn't actually lived up to the hype for most of that time. He's the Gracie Gold of mens skating if Gracie had two world medals. He's a jumper and he performs like Elvis Stojko. Brian Orser needs him to step up this season in the depleted post-Sochi field. He hasn't competed a major international since Worlds so he may have to kick the dust off the tires a bit. The mixture of the tacky as hell Black Betty and highbrow "Barber of Seville" sum up Javier perfectly.

Takahito Mura (JPN) has suffered greatly from the depth of mens figure skaters in Japan. He won the 2014 Four Continents, won the recent International Challenge Cup and placed 2nd at the Lombardia Trophy. This is going to be his season to break out.

Takahiko Kozuka (JPN) has had an up and down go of it the past few years. The 2010 Grand Prix looked like his coming out party, but he has struggled with his jumps as of late and Yuzuru Hanyu blew by him at home. Missing the Sochi team must have shredded his confidence, but he finished a respectable 6th at the 2014 Worlds and will look to reestablish himself this season. I think he could've benefitted from performing a senior B event.

2013 Skate America: Men's Short Program Recap

I'm happy to admit when I'm wrong, but I thought Tatsuki Machida (JPN) was a fluke last season, but I just look stupid now. His East of Eden short, while on my list of banned music, was exactly what you want in a short program. It was clean. In this field, a clean program won the day. That Quad Toe/Triple Toe didn't hurt either. He didn't blow me away with the performance, but he was calm, calculated, and strong. He leads after the short. Short Program Total: 91.18

The biggest surprise thus far is Jason Brown (USA) in 2nd. We knew he was good, but it's never wise to expect such a strong Senior GP debut and Jason blew us away. He is an artist and channeling Prince could be risky, but he made it work. We wish him luck in the long and hope he maintains his hold on that podium spot. Short Program Total: 83.78

How great was it to see Adam Rippon (USA) looking like himself. Perhaps the last in a long string of coaching changes finally did the trick. The Quad Lutz happened-it wasn't perfect-but it happened and that's a start to a good season that for his sake, we hope ends with a trip to Sochi. He laid the ground work for that tonight.Short Program Total: 80.26

Takahiko Kozuka (JPN) also made a nice statement after a rough 2012-2013 season. We are loving his jazzy side. Nothing about it was phenomenal, but it was a nice building block for an Olympic season. It's good to see him stay on his feet. Short Program Total: 77.75

Daisuke Takahashi (JPN), sad as it is to say, looks old. His body is failing him and those jumps just aren't happening. He makes a great case for solo ice dance because he moves on the ice better than anyone I've ever seen. One of his hip circles is worth all of Patrick Chan's PCS for the season. We hope his artistry can boost his overall total in the free. Short Program Total: 77.09

Max Aaron (USA) was certainly a disappointment for the home crowd that had such high hopes. His style has improved, but he is known as a technician and when you can't land your bread and butter jump, what is left? He best figure it out quickly or US Figure Skating will think of him as yesterday's news. Short Program Total: 75.91

Alexander Majorov (SWE) is very vanilla to me. There isn't much that stands out to me about him: no crazy hair, no garish costumes, no ugly gloves, no obvious gay vibe, nothing unique. He is just kind of there. He's a nice skater, but he needs to develop an identity if he wants to stand out. Short Program Total: 74.97

Artur Gachinski (RUS) is probably one more botched Quad away from oblivion. Mishin can't have that much more tolerance for somebody who can't land jumps. If you can't jump, Lord knows you can't move in a way that doesn't look like a shopping cart, what can you do to earn points? The answer is...not much. Short Program Total: 37.24

2013 Skate America: Mens Preview

I'll preface by saying that there are no clear cut favorites in this Men's Event so my predictions are merely an educated guess. That being said, I'm THRILLED that figure skating season is back (especially in this Olympic year) and I am happy to get back to covering this gorgeous and dramatic sport with my skating family. Since the Men kick off Skate America with their Short Program Friday 10/18 at 7:00 pm EST, let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. They finish up Saturday at 7 with their free skate.

I have to go with a little combination of my gut and my heart here. Daisuke Takahashi (JPN) will win this event. He is in the twilight of his career, and his body isn't what it used to be, but his artistry will carry him through this final Olympic season. His Lennon & McCartney free skate will showcase his showmanship and allow him to wrap the audience around his little finger as he always does. He only placed 6th at the 2013 Worlds, but I think he has the grit and the drive to go out with a bang this season. This event was a lucky draw for him in that he won't have to face Chan or Fernandez here in Detroit.

Max Aaron (USA) is the reigning US Champion and finished just behind Takahashi at the 2013 Worlds. While Takahashi is finishing a stellar career, Aaron is just beginning. He is poised to make a splash on his first senior Grand Prix circuit, and he will have the advantage of the home crowd. His technique is phenomenal and he is making leaps and bounds as a performer, though that will never be his strength. He will channel a younger Takahashi in his Historia de un Amor short and almost every other skater in the world with his Carmen free. I've been hearing good things about it, but I purposely am not watching any programs because I want to be surprised at the GP events. I think that great technical abilities and some home cooking will help him earn a medal in Detroit.

Denis Ten (KAZ) was the surprise of the 2013 Worlds. He has always been a talented but streaky skater, and he finally put it all together last March to earn a Silver at Worlds. Many even believed he deserved to beat a flawed Chan. This season will really tell the tale: is he still a streaky skater who will struggle with the mental aspect of the sport, or will he finally hold it together for a full season and prove that he belongs at the top of the sport? I think that his new International success will help improve his PCS scores, but that can only happen if he holds it together with the jumps. I think he'll make mistakes, but do enough to take a podium spot here in Detroit.



Takahiko Kozuka (JPN) is facing probably the biggest season of his life. He is still young enough to

keep competing for several years, but he is at a crossroads in his career. He shows such promise early in this Olympic cycle, earning a World medal in 2011, but he has been sliding since then. He once had such clean technique, but he looks to be lacking confidence in his jumps and he lacks the showmanship of Takahashi and some of the other top men. If he can stay consistent, he will make Japan's Olympic team, but in such a competitive country, he won't make it to Sochi if he starts faltering early on.

Adam Rippon (USA) is one of our all time favorites, but this is a crucial year for him as well. After the 2010 Olympics, he seemed poised to take over the role of top male in the US, but that hasn't happened yet. He has made the coaching changes and every year we feel like this is the year for him, but something else happens that keeps him from taking that step forward. He earns the PCS for his artistry and his smooth lines, but he needs that quad. Let's stop talking about the quad and just do the quad, well that and the triple axel too. He is a very heady skater, so if he doesn't show well here at Skate America, that could be the season for him. If he does do well (and we are pulling for him) that could be just the confidence boost that he needs to ace the Grand Prix and earn a spot to Sochi.

I have to talk about Jason Brown (USA) because I love him and that's all there is to it. He, in my

opinion, is the future of US Men's figure skating because he really has it all, plus he isn't afraid to go all out and try new things, something we've been lacking in recent years. His new River Dance free is supposedly spectacular, but as I said above, I have been making myself wait until this weekend to watch them. Nobody is expecting him to medal, this is his first senior GP event, but because he has no pressure, watch out for him because he just could earn a medal if the favorites flame out

• Skating really fast thus far
• Oh no, fall on the triple lutz, not a good start
• Popped the axel into a single, very hard way for him to start his Nationals
• Oh no, a single flip
• My heart goes out to him right now
• I like that he's still maintaining the intensity of performance
• Just not his day, but he'll have better ones, I'm sure of it

2) Adam Rippon

• I hope he can pick up the energy in this room
• Beautiful 3f-3t combo, beautiful and easy
• Gorgeous triple axel
• He looks very quiet and calm
• I think it's impossible for him to hit a bad position
• Fantastic Rippon-Lutz, as per usual
• He is a little more firey tonight than I've seen him before
• He is really selling it in this step sequence, fantastic, good for him

3) Scott Dyer
  Music: Sing, Sing, Sing

• Oh now, 3 sal was clean, but slipped on the 3 loop
• Very jazzy, good musicality here
• Double axel, not a triple like others here
• Nice stretch and flexibility in the spin
• Triple lutz, a lot of snow flying on that landing
• Good skills, good basics

  33.60 (TES) + 33.89 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 66.49

4) Alexander Johnson
  Music: O Mio Babbino Caro

• This is one of my favorite opera arias, a joy for any singer
• Only a double axel
• Chest slightly down on the triple flip landing, but mostly clean
• I love that he extends his energy the whole way through his fingertips
• Stumble out of that triple lutz, almost went into the boards
• I like that he throws his head back in those spins, he extends the body line well through that
• A bit of a botched camel, he well may lose credit for that
• I liked the soft quality of that program, but for a short program it wasn't clean enough

5) Alexander Aiken
  Music: Paint It Black

• Lots of energy going into that triple axel, under-rotated and a fall
• 3lz-3t, just squeaked that out
• He seems really anxious out there and uptight
• I can tell he really wants to get off the ice at this point
• Nice high split jump
• Nice start for his first year as a senior
• Paul Wylie sighting

  23.87 (TES) + 26.18 (PCS) -1.00 (DED) = 49.05

6) William Brewster
  Music:

• I'm loving this purple on him
• Really good 3s-3t, easy combo, but well executed
• 3lz
• 2a
• He's done everything that was asked of him, now he needs to sell it
• Good gentle flow, nothing seems forced or muscled
• I like the fierce little attitude going into the that step sequence
• Really nice subtleties, down to the head and hands movements

7) Ross Miner
  Music: Para Ti

• I love the costume, it's simple, but still has bling
• Really deep knees going into that 3A, great smooth landing
• He goes so fast and bakes it look easy, just gliding like nobody's business
• Wonky landing out of that combination, will lose some GOE marks, but landed it
• Lovely triple flip
• Fantastic speed in that spin sequence
• He's selling the choreography, that footwork will get a high level
• Aside from the funky landing, he'll be happy with that short
• He rose to the occasion in terms of laying down a clean short

8) Jonathan Cassar
  Music: Tango de Roxanne

• Great attack of this choreography
• 3lz-2t
• 2a out of an Ina Bauer
• He doesn't have the difficult jumps, but what he does is so beautiful
• He is a force out on the ice, he takes command
• Going all out in selling the spins and steps
• Exquisite spread eagle as well
• Fantastic "performance"

9) Wesley Campbell
  Music: Concierto D'Aranjuez

• Wow, that boy is as tall as a tight end, let's see how he skates tonight
• Very high wrap on that 1lz-2t combination
• Double axel
• His technical marks will suffer tonight because of that popped lutz
• He is remarkable good at getting into those knees for such a tall guy
• Very fast spins, especially in those crossing variations
• Not the best, but he got through

10) Daniel Raad
  Music: Kashmir

• I love the metallic and bling on that costume
• Terribly long lead-in, but really tight triple axel
• Triple flip-3 turn-3triple toe
• That smock kind of breaks up the lines in the spins as it flaps about
• Traveling quite a bit on the spins and losing speeds
• I think he's one of those "all jumps" guys, but they are huge
• Looked to have run out of energy by the time he hit that last jump

11) Max Aaron
  Music: Assassin's Tango

• I'm loving the sparkles and the details on the back of his top
• Very subtle attention to detail on this opening choreography
• Quad sal! First quad of the night, made it look really easy, he was not phased at all
• A little wild in the air on that triple axel, but he reeled it in and landed
• The spins could be better, but we know he is more a jumper
• 3lz-3toe were very off in the air, but he pulled it out, he's a fighter that one
• All his landings are so quiet
• Good speed in this one-leg segment in the step sequence
• He's not flashy by any means, but he does the work and does it well

12) Grant Hochstein
  Music: Clair de Lune

• Fantastic use of the upper body, very expressive
• 3lz-3t
• Under-rotated the triple axel, he hung back a little too long, landed on crossed feet
• Beautiful triple loop, though not the more difficult triple flip we see from most of these men
• Really soft knees, great bend
• Beautiful spinning positions

13) Brandon Mroz
  Music: Mack the Knife

• He's giving us a little face there at the beginning!
• Fall on the Quad toe, but it looked rotated so he'll get full credit
• Really low landing on that triple axel, good save, took a lot of strength to eek that out
• 3f-2t, looked so hard for him to pull out the landings
• It's unfortunate for it to go down like this, especially in a skater who has such fantastic jumps when he's on
• I think he gave up on it before he even took the ice, sad to see for such a talented guy

14) Douglas Razzano
  Music: Piano Concerto No. 2

• I loved him last year, I hope that Doug shows up tonight
• Lovely speed into that 3A
• His expression is very subtle, like a refreshing breeze
• Unfortunate quad toe, looked fully rotated
• 3t-3t, not the difficulty of many skaters
• It's sad to see such a hard-working skater not reap the benefits of all of their work
• He's very regal, very proper on the ice

15) Keegan Messing
  Music: Robin Hood

• This kid is such a character
• Ginormous triple axel
• He blew us away last season making the final group in the free
• 3lz-3toe, good saves
• His spins are so fast
• He reminds me so much of Kevin Van Der Perren
• Triple flip, no quad, come on Keegan!
• This is kind of a like a caricature of Robin Hood
• He is a wild skater, like he just throws everything like a bomb

16) Jason Brown
  Music: Grand Guignol

• Jason has this light about him, he and his coach have complimentary personalities
• Fantastic use of the whole body, so articulate and specific in his movements
• 3lz-3toe was crisp and clean
• I love the hand gestures in the spins, and just everywhere
• 3f-maybe a little two footed
• Fantastic stretch in the camel spin
• I'm loving this unitard
• He's fascinating, I feel like he has an artist's soul
• Love that high kick
• He will be a crowd pleaser for years to come

17) Jeremy Abbott
  Music: Swing

• I'm obsessed with those glittery suspenders
• Hate Benji Schwimmer, love this program
• Every ounce of this is so stylized
• Perfect 3f-3t, looked so calm
• Gorgeous triple axel, that was as smooth as they come
• That footwork really scuffs up some snow, but it adds to the effect
• Nobody acts like he does
• Steps right up into a triple lutz
• Jeremy is back!
• Little traveling and balance check on that scratch spin
• He is putting this on for the fans and himself, I feel like he's not even thinking of judges right now
• Fantastic!

18) Armin Mahbanoozadeh
  Music: Kashmir

• Made a coaching change, looking more confident
• Good 3a, 3f-3t
• He's ticking off the elements which is exactly what you want in a good short
• He is very calm tonight, very smooth and fast
• He uses the whole body well, and the arm movements actually mean something, it's not just flailing
• Fantastic improvement from him after a difficult GP series

19) Joshua Farris
  Music: Clair de Lune

• I died for him all Junior Grand Prix season, he was like a breath of fresh air
• Oh no, that was a very awkward landing on the triple axel
• He seems very tense tonight, usually he's so calm and smooth
• Oh no, he just tripped a little in footwork, he's just not the relaxed skater we saw all year
• Such beautiful lightness to those spins

• This is a new approach to La Vie en Rose
• Gigantic 3a, but a stumble out
• Good 3a-3t combo
• He's almost a little too fast, seems out of control
